»¿¿¿ bauhaus« (selam bauhaus) means »hello bauhaus« in Amharic, one of the most important languages in Ethiopia. Visually, one could also interpret the Amharic letters as "Why Bauhaus" to question the overuse of this label during the Bauhaus Centennial in 2019. So, why Bauhaus?100 years ago, the teaching of architecture and urban design at the Bauhaus responded to rapid changes in society and their impact on the built environment. The ambitions and methods of the historical Bauhaus can still inspire us in the present day: Today, facing global climate change and human migration, these themes are more pressing than ever. Through the Emerging City Lab Addis Ababa (ECL-AA), the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development (EiABC) at Addis Ababa University established a joint lab. Combining innovation and social responsibility through experiments with building materials, practices and planning technologies beyond cultural, social, and disciplinary boundaries, this publication shows educational and research projects that emerged from the collaboration. In 2019 they were presented in the exhibition »¿¿¿ bauhaus (selam bauhaus) - hello bauhaus« on the occasion of the centenary of the Bauhaus and the 65th anniversary of the EiABC.

We Rest Here Content is not the history of the Imperial Light Horse Regiment - that was written by the regiment's Intelligence Officer, Lieutenant George Fleming Gibson and published in 1937 as The Story of the Imperial Light Horse in the South African War 1899-1902. We Rest Here Content approaches the subject of the I.L.H. from a different viewpoint. It looks at all the known monuments and memorials as well as other accounts of I.L.H. involvement in the war.--

Welcome to the "Dictionary of Vernacular Swahili Plant Names," a comprehensive resource designed to bridge the gap between the rich linguistic heritage of Swahili and the scientific world of botany. This dictionary serves as a valuable tool for researchers, students, educators, horticulturists, conservationists, and anyone interested in the flora of East Africa and beyond. The Swahili language, with its deep historical roots and widespread usage across East Africa, is a cultural treasure that reflects the diverse influences of African, Arabic, Persian, and European languages. In this region, plants play a crucial role in everyday life, not just as sources of food, medicine, and material, but also as integral elements of cultural practices and traditional knowledge. The names given to these plants in Swahili are often imbued with meanings and stories that offer insights into the local culture, history, and environment.Recognizing the importance of preserving this linguistic and botanical heritage, this dictionary aims to catalogue the vernacular Swahili names of plants and provide their corresponding scientific names. By doing so, we facilitate a dialogue between traditional knowledge and scientific understanding, fostering a deeper appreciation of the natural world and its cultural significance. Each entry in this dictionary includes the vernacular Swahili name, the botanical name. The botanical names are based on the latest taxonomic classifications to ensure accuracy and relevance. We have taken great care to consult with linguists, botanists, and local communities to compile and verify the information presented in this dictionary. Our goal is to create a reliable and user-friendly reference that respects and celebrates the linguistic diversity of Swahili-speaking regions while contributing to the global body of botanical knowledge. As you explore the pages of this dictionary, we hope you will not only gain a greater understanding of the plants that surround us but also develop an appreciation for the rich linguistic tapestry that describes them. May this dictionary serve as a bridge between languages, cultures, and disciplines, fostering a shared respect for the natural world and its invaluable diversity.

"The new, extensively revised, third edition of Bradt's East African Wildlife guide provides a user-friendly overview of East Africa's peerless wildlife - not only 'big game' and other large mammals (an alluring list that includes elephant, lion, leopard, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, gorilla and chimpanzee), but also birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Excellent for independent travellers, it excels as a standalone guide combining both wildlife and visitor information, and is also a perfect complement to traditional field guides or to Bradt travel guides to Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda. From the snow-capped peaks of Kilimanjaro to the sultry Indian Ocean coastline, with a range of habitats that span parched desert and vast transparent lakes, open savannah and tropical rainforest, east Africa is simply the world's finest wildlife-viewing destination. Straddling the Equator and bisected by the magnificent Great Rift Valley, it is a true Mecca for wildlife enthusiasts. It harbours the continent's most popular safari locations, including legendary reserves such as the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Maasai Mara, Samburu, Murchison Falls, Bwindi and Tsavo. Written by Philip Briggs, the world's foremost guidebook writer on Africa and a wildlife expert, East African Wildlife covers the fauna of Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. Some 240 colour images by acclaimed photographer Ariadne Van Zandebergen illustrate many animals likely to be encountered, while the engaging text extends beyond basic identification features to illuminate the natural history, habits, whereabouts and ecology of the species that visitors will encounter. To enable you to plan a safari that suits your interests, East African Wildlife offers top tips for optimising your wildlife experience, a 'where to go' overview which outlines the key wildlife attractions at major sites within each country, and advice on when to visit. There's even an engaging section about 'wildlife from your window', for when you are staying in towns and hotels. Accessibly written and beautifully illustrated, the guide will appeal both to the first-time visitor and to the serious naturalist seeking a compact volume to carry around - and one that will sit proudly on bookshelves thereafter as a compelling souvenir of an unforgettable holiday."

This book provides a contemporary overview of Boko Haram's activities. Since Boko Haram emerged in 2002, media-driven narratives as well as social scientific methodologies have been increasingly applied to draw generalisable conclusions on what goals the groups have pursued, what strategies it has used for these purposes and the counter campaign strategies authorities have pursued. But from 2009 to 2018, Boko Haram has pursued high-intensity violence: assassinations, bombing, kidnappings, beheading or threats of violence, conscriptions and territorial occupation. This makes it imperative to deepen and broaden our understanding of the groups¿ activities toward a problem-solving and policy-relevant analysis.Previously published in Security Journal Volume 33, issue 3, September 2020

"A sweeping account of how the sea routes of Asia have transformed a vast expanse of the globe over the past five hundred years, powerfully shaping the modern world in the centuries leading up to our own, the volume of traffic across Asian sea routes-an area stretching from East Africa and the Middle East to Japan-exploded, eventually making them the busiest in the world. The result was a massive circulation of people, commodities, religion, culture, technology, and ideas. In this book, Eric Tagliacozzo chronicles how the seas and oceans of Asia have shaped the history of the largest continent for the past half millennium, leaving an indelible mark on the modern world in the process.Paying special attention to migration, trade, the environment, and cities, In Asian Waters examines the long history of contact between China and East Africa; the spread of Hinduism and Buddhism across the Bay of Bengal; and the intertwined histories of Islam and Christianity in the Philippines. The book illustrates how India became central to the spice trade; how the Indian Ocean became a 'British lake' between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries; and how lighthouses and sea mapping played important roles in imperialism. The volume ends by asking what may happen if China comes to rule the waves of Asia, as Britain once did. A novel account showing how Asian history can be seen as a whole when seen from the water, In Asian Waters presents a voyage into a past that is still alive in the present"--

The charming real-life fairy tale of an American secretary who discovers she has been chosen king of an impoverished fishing village on the west coast of Africa. King Peggy chronicles the astonishing journey of American secretary, Peggielene Bartels, who suddenly finds herself king to a town of 7,000 people on Ghana's central coast, half a world away. Upon arriving for her crowning ceremony in beautiful Otuam, she discovers the dire reality: there's no running water, no doctor, no high school, and many of the village elders are stealing the town's funds. To make matters worse, her uncle (the late king) sits in a morgue awaiting a proper funeral in the royal palace, which is in ruins. Peggy's first two years as king of Otuam unfold in a way that is stranger than fiction. In the end, a deeply traditional African town is uplifted by the ambitions of its decidedly modern female king, and Peggy is herself transformed, from an ordinary secretary to the heart and hope of her community.

From oral and literature accounts, and retold stories, of a family's ancestral journey as far back as the authors could trace, it became clear that these oral stories in diaspora communities complement the recorded history of their ancestors and those accounts from several colonizers they encountered. The oral stories emphasized being free people pursuing self-determination and navigating a world reshaped by warring empires and growing forms of colonization since the 15th century. This family's stories are parts of those from the early communities of: i) free people in Africa, the Iberian peninsula, and Jamaica, ii) indentured communities who seized the first opportunity to pursue self-determination, and iii) freed people from the 18th century Atlantic slave trade. Collectively, they stood as a lighthouse for freedom across several generations in early West Africa (Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Cape Verde Island), Angola, Jamaica, British American colony, Early Canada, and Britain. In Freetown, the family's ancestral history in the last 200 years extended to empowering themselves and others in parts of Sierra Leone and beyond. This edition attempts to employ indigenous written sources that are now giving credence to oral narratives from within communities we are connected to around the world. One such example of our current view is that our ancestors, who were among those who sailed away from New York to Nova Scotia, Canada, began free of any obligation to British America and the newly independent America. The legendary Thomas Peters from this Nova Scotian community traveled across to Britain in early Canada, representing the interest of his free community to return to Africa. That community was not prepared to subjugate itself to yet another evolving colony in early Canada. Their ultimate return to Africa and reception by Naimbana II, Obai of the Temne people of Sierra Leone, and other community leaders was a recognition that the 16 ships of Africans in March 1792, from Nova Scotia were descendants of fellow Africans. Our Ancestors, once settled in Freetown, Sierra Leone, became a beacon in Africa for others in the "Fellowship of the Free" within the era of subjugation.

Early life experiences of the author in the northern province of Zambia in Africa, and training in healthcare with subsequent employment in the mining industry healthcare owned jointly by the Anglo-American Corporation and the Government of the Republic of Zambia, mark the beginning of the journey of duty. After working for eight years from 1990 to 1998, this initial part of the journey of duty becomes full of challenging encounters and adventure stories associated with copper mining operations. Moving to Britain as a migrant worker marks the second part of the long journey of duty. Over the next 22 years, the author is immersed in the busy National Health Service (NHS), an umbrella organisation for thousands of hospitals and allied institutions. Experiencing the British way of life becomes fascinating but then part of this way of life is about how politics influence the way healthcare is delivered by the NHS which takes the centre stage throughout the rest of this book. The NHS tales about itsorigins, evolution, inspiring radical transformation in the 21st century, traffic light targets, and the dark times of scandals with red tape are quite revealing especially for people intending to work, train or are working as healthcare professionals. In the thick of it are some of the shining stars with rare qualities of fixing the broken parts of the healthcare systems that end this book.

The presence of Africans in the German Democratic Republic is very rarely thought of in connection with the experience of exile. Instead, Africans in the GDR are predominantly viewed through the prism of educational and labor migration. While such research has undoubtedly produced valuable insights, it often fails to adequately account for the implicit Eurocentrism, methodological nationalism, and anti-communist bias inherent in Western knowledge production. This study offers a different approach. Through biographical portrayal, it unfolds the life stories of African freedom fighters who lived in exile in the GDR and, ultimately, remained in reunified Germany, with the main case study being a Malawian activist who was expelled from East to West Berlin. Recounting his experiences along with those of some South African exiles, chief among them a former medical worker for the ANC's armed wing, the study ethnographically reconstructs the multiple entanglements between the "Second" and "Third" worlds from the vantage point of the politically displaced within the concrete historical contexts of African decolonization, the struggle against the Malawian Banda dictatorship, and the struggle against South African apartheid.
