A coal miner from Bakerton, Pennsylvania, Donatelli served his country as a tail gunner aboard a B-17 and found his lifes calling in the bleak con?nes of a Nazi prison camp. When Army Air Corps Sta? Sergeant Donatelli umpired softball games to boost morale for his fellow airmen at Stalag Luft VI, little did he know he was taking ?edgling steps towards becoming one of the most respected umpires in baseball history. However, prior to the end of the war, he would be subjected to a brutal black march across war-torn Europe before orchestrating a daring escape.Less than a decade after serving his country, Donatelli found himself at the pinnacle of his professionumpiring in the 1955 World Series between the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees. Hardened by his war experiences and his years of working in the coal mines, Donatelli hustled on the baseball diamond as if his life depended on it. He gave his heart and soul to the game he loved. Yet despite ?nding his dream occupation, Donatelli voluntarily put his career and livelihood in jeopardy, as he and his fellow umpires, Shag Crawford, Jocko Conlan, Al Barlick, and others, spearheaded the formation of the ?rst umpires union, the Major League Umpires Association. In 1983, John Ball was almost at a midpoint in his lifea time to assess the first half before he carried on with the second. It was then that he had to deal with the diagnosis of Parkinsons disease, just before he turned forty years old. In this memoir, Ball narrates his story of how he has lived with Parkinsons disease and how he has worked to create a better life for others struggling with difficult diagnoses and debilitating diseases. Living Well, Running Hard offers insight into Balls growth from isolation into a leadership role in the Parkinsons community. His long struggle to understand the disease provides an in-depth look at the complexities of Parkinsons. Ball tells how his transition was triggered by a childhood desire to run a marathon and how his love of running, his desire to take action, and his willingness to take on challenges come together in the formation of Team Parkinson. In spite of his diagnosis, Ball has continued to run the Los Angeles Marathon each of the last fifteen years. Intimate and inspiring, Living Well, Running Hard communicates one mans story of perseverance and triumph.
The legacy of the Marshall players who perished transcends wins and losses. Their tragic deaths squashed the likelihood of a bloody race riot on campus. The evening of November 14, 1970 was damp and chilly with a steady drizzle and dense fog. Students at Marshall University had no idea that the nights horrific events would change their lives forever. On this night, a plane crash wiped out most of the schools football team. Unless you were there, you could never fully comprehend the gravity of grief that engulfed Huntington, West Virginia, in the days following the worst aviation disaster in the history of American sports. I know. I was there. Ill never forget. It could have been me on that plane. I played football at MU for two seasons. A year before the tragedy, I left the team for personal reasons. When the school began the daunting task of resurrecting its football program in the spring of 71, it was a no-brainer decision for me to rejoin the team and become part of the rebuilding process. Media projects devoted to the plane crash provide well-deserved notoriety. Still, there are glaring omissions. Now, for the first time, former Marshall defensive back Craig T. Greenlee tells the real story the whole story about Thundering Herd football from back in the day.

Courageous Women * Supportive Men * Helpful AngelsAngels Along the River is an inspirational story of hope, fear, joy and accomplishment that is a testament to the incredible tenacity and spirit of ordinary people everywhere. When Eleanor Lahr read Follow the River, a novel based upon the true experiences of Mary Draper Ingles, it changed her life. Mary was captured in 1755 by Shawnee Indians and carried 500 miles from her home. Eleanor felt inexplicably compelled to retrace Marys escape route. With little previous experience in the great outdoors, but with plucky courage, she planned and trained extensively. Sometimes alone and sometimes with strangers, she hiked for 43 days along the Ohio, Kanawha, and New Rivers.Misunderstandings and ingrained prejudice challenged the band of walkers as much as Mother Nature; however, angels in everyday clothes helped them overcome their personal limitations, bloody blisters, broken bones, and life-threatening situations. Eleanor and her companions carried Mary's courageous story from Kentucky to Virginia in their own remarkable feat of determination and achievement. As an act of self-preservation Eleanor did not understand initially, her physical journey became a transformative personal journey that redefined her as a capable, strong, and independent woman."e;The inspiration is contagious and it affects us all in different waysEleanors book is another carrier of the inspiration. James Alexander Thom, author of the best-seller Follow the River

Wrestling is as much a part of winter in Iowa as is snow and cold. Dreams of state championships begin in elementary school and, since 1972, come to fruition - or heart-breakingly fall short - at an arena in Des Moines in February or March. In 2011, the tournament finals sold out for the 24th consecutive year. Individuals and teams carve their names on the sports history tree each year. Some champions were blind, some were deaf, some were amputees but all earn the respect of thousands for their work ethic - a hallmark of the states populace. Is this heaven? No, its better than that. Its high school wrestling in Iowa!
It is with great honor that I serve as Executive Director of the ISPA. My academic background is in psychology where I have a BA in Psychology from the University of Chicago. My sports background spans over 15 years. From the age of 9 I have competed in quite a few Triathlons and was often the youngest competitor in these races. Over the course of my career, I have completed 4 Ironman Triathlons and 15 Marathons. I have placed in the top three in numerous Triathlons and have won several age group awards. I played varsity baseball in high school as a pitcher. I was recruited to play Division 1 baseball in college, however, my passion for Triathlon won me over and I decided to focus on this and my studies. Sports have always played a major role my life and I feel their effect on me was paramount in my development as a more rounded and confident individual. I strongly believe in the ISPAs mission to raise the level of care athletes receive. I have seen first hand the impact that individuals who work with athletes can have, and it is vitally important that these individuals adhere to the highest ethics and standards of practice in their given fields.

We all seek to be in the presence of greatness. Some of us have actually been there. I knew I was there before reaching the age of ten. Saturday after Saturday, year after year, along I tagged with my dad and Butler Universitys Coach Hinkle. We marched together down the tunnel connecting the fieldhouse and football field, accompanied by a herd of stampeding metal cleats echoing throughout the concrete tunnel. These titans were preparing for battle. Out of the tunnel into blazing sunlight ran the warriors to the cheers of throngs of Bulldog fans. I never stopped asking dad and Coach Hinkle every question that came to mind, which were many. They even suggested at one point that I go over to a long wooden bench of some kind and ask some more questions directly to a real football player who was apparently awaiting his turn to play. It just couldnt get any better than this. That is, until it was basketball season.
This book is for the many people that have experienced some of their deepest passions from sports. It is about players, coaches, and parents. My desire is that the reader rekindles whatever passion he/she has previously experienced, or is currently experiencing in youth sports. Hopefully, one can learn from my experiences, and use them to create positive outcomes with their children. Sport is a universal language that impacts countless people throughout the world. It is a drama of the body and mind that is often played out in front of audiences. Even persons who were only casual players in their younger days can be avid fans. They care deeply about the competition, and whether their team plays well and wins. Then, there are the perpetual participants, as evidenced by the explosive growth of adult sport programs.
The purpose of this book is to provide athletic coaches with simple methods to enhance their coaching technique. Coaching is teaching. Therefore, coaches must look at their teaching effectiveness in order to become better coaches. In addition, the athletic arena provides a wonderful opportunity for a Christian witness. Often, coaches find it difficult to form a marriage between their coaching and a Christian lifestyle. This book intends to meld the two together, providing clear, effective teacher education and biblical advice to Christian coaches. The book also provides selected scriptures from Gods Word. Can a Christian coach really make a difference? How can one Christian coach save the world of sport? Well, first there is more than one Christian coach out there. Second, if there was only one Christian coach willing to go to battle with Christ, they would fight and win. One coach plus Jesus equals a majority. Recall that it appeared as though David didnt stand a chance when he went to fight Goliath. David was not alone. David knew that God would be with him. Was he afraid? Maybe, but his faith in God was greater than his fear! Hopefully, this book motivates coaches to allow their faith in Christ to shine through their coaching style and behavior.
