In 1933, America was in the midst of the Great Depression. The depth of despair created in the American people earned the panic a singular place in the history of the nations economic turmoil. Football, a uniquely American game, weathered these hard times, adapted, and made some of the pain a little easier to endure. In 1933, author Mark C. Bodanza examines the important role football played in the midst of the nations historic crisis. Bodanza recounts this dramatic year both on and off the field of the professional and college gridirons and analyzes it in the context of the times. He tells the story of a momentous season shared by the high schools of Fitchburg and Leominster, Massachusetts, a rivalry dating back to 1894. In the prior thirty-nine seasons, the teams had played each other forty-nine times. But, 1933 was different; the game had never had such significance. More than ever, Depression-wary Americans needed a reprieve from their cares and concerns. Football provided a welcome relief. Including period photos, 1933 narrates how the sport of footballwhich has created some of the nations most magical moments in sportswas impacted by the Great Depression in a variety of ways, some with lasting consequences.

On a March afternoon in Cleveland, St. Bonaventure battled powerful Kentucky for 40 minutes and two overtimes in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Tournament. Though the Bonnies would lose that day, the moments that accompanied that game provided St. Bonaventure's proud alumni a vast sense of pride. For a men's basketball program that was once considered an elite entity, it was fulfilling return to glory. No one could have envisioned then that St. Bonaventure basketball would endure lowest of lows almost exactly three years later. The St. Bonaventure basketball scandal of 2003 created national headlines and rocked to its core a proud institution. The university president schemed to allow an ineligible player, by NCAA standards, on the court, leading to series of damning events. Victories were forfeited, a team in turmoil quit on its season, several of those involved were fired and the president of the board of trustees, ripped by his role in the sorry state of affairs, committed suicide. As student-managers, we closely witnessed the circumstances that led to the upheaval. We were in the locker room, the coaches offices and on the team bench. We were there for all the corruption, deceit and greed. We were there when an ill-conceived plan came tumbling down in the harshest of manners and St. Bonaventure's lost ways became a punchline across the country.

AView From The Lake is much more then just a book of fishing stories. Yes there are plenty of fish stories but it just as much a book about people and places. There are memories of fishing with a grandfather and father, old and new friends and now a grandson. We travel to waters near and far. We venture to Cozumel for bonefish, Key West for tarpon, and to Canada for walleyes and northern pike. Closer to home we fish for bass and panfish, on the Mississippi River for walleyes, and an ice fishing trip to Lake Of The Woods. There are memories of an island and the adventure of camping there as a young boy, confidence in a favorite bait, the joys of Christmas vacation and the much anticipated arrival of the greatest fishing catalog of all time. The stories also relate the frustration with lawn work during fishing season, the importance of selecting a good fishing hat, and the beauty and memories associated with an old reel. There is a cabin in Minnesota loaded with colorful characters where just being there is more important then catching fish. There is a muskie fishing story from northern Wisconsin that actually begins in Innsbruck, Austria and another story of a mysterious trout stream in North Carolina. There are memories and laughter, lakes and streams and rivers, family and friends, and all the things that make fishing what it is.

However Bubba Brown is back--vengeful, desperate, and determined to ruin the man he feels responsible for his demise, Hillsdale High School football coach Ben Reynolds. Jeremy Johnson, once a part-time starter for the Hillmen early in the season, has other goals on his mind, primarily head varsity manager Jennifer Kirby. Yet, his recklessness and audacity create another threat to the squad as they prepare for their ultimate challenge. Running back and linebacker Matt Gerard, a steadying influence both on and off the field for Hillsdale, must choose whats best for him or whats best for his team, as they face a semi-final opponent like no other. The Hillsdale Hillmens team slogan for the season, Carpe Diem (Seize the Day), provides the backdrop for this third and final installment of the Hillsdale trilogy. When opportunity beckons, people become judged as to how they respond at that moment. Its no different in Hillsdale, with the chance to be the first team in school history to play for the State Title staring at them right in their faces. How will they respond?
The hardships of the Depression and World War II had taken a toll on the hopes and dreams of Americans everywhere. Central Ohio was no exception. The Ashville High School basketball teams quest for the Ohio Class B state championship in 1945 lifted the hearts and spirits of the residents of the rural communities of Harrison Township in Pickaway County. The Broncos of 1945 describes the experiences of young boys growing up in three neighboring communities who were enjoying the innocence and camaraderie of small-town life while enduring personal sacrifices during the depression era. Playing pickup games of basketball solidified the friendships among these boys through the depression, war, high school, and life beyond. Mentored in the skills of basketball by older brothers, uncles, and cousins; instilled with a competitive spirit through pride of family and community, and inspired by the Bronco basketball tradition of Ashville High School, these boys bonded in their love for the game. They played basketball in the alleys, backyards, and barns regardless of weather or playing conditions. In the sixth grade, new teacher, Lawrence Fullen, a former high school basketball coach at a nearby school, introduced disciplined and team oriented basketball fundamentals to the boys. He built confidence in their abilities and motivates them to give more attention to improving their academics. An unusual turn of events led to Fullen being promoted to high school athletic director in August 1942 and the quest for a state championship begins. The story is authentic. The facts are derived from interviews with players, competitors, students and residents of the communities and documented by stories from newspapers, scrapbooks, and school publications. It is a story of hope. Its a narrative of young boys rising above adversity, beating the odds, and achieving more than societys expectations during a tumultuous time.

This book is for anyone who has attempted, or even considered a career in the entertainment industry, or followed a dream even when logic and those around him said to stop.

5 C Hero is the inspirational story of Joel Stephens, a truly gifted athlete and devout Christian, who lived the values of Christianity, Courage, Compassion, Character, and Commitment. With the brightest of futures ahead of him, Stephens lost his battle with a rare form of cancer in 1998 at the age of 22. DAloisio, as coach, mentor, and friend, knew Stephens better than most. In this book, he chronicles the record-setting athletic exploits of Joel throughout his high school years as well as his professional career as a baseball player in the Baltimore Orioles organization, and his decision to accept a scholarship to play Division I football for Syracuse University. DAloisio takes the reader on a painful odyssey as Joel accepts his illness yet valiantly struggles to overcome it. This tragic story is told with humor, intensity, and great warmth. It is remarkable that Stephens touched so many lives in such a short period of time. The Unbroken Line is the riveting story of how truly heartless the business of professional football was and is from the poor pension plans and inadequate medical benefits to the greed of union leadership which the authors argue takes advantage of and turns its back on the very individuals who make the game great. At no time in the annals of sports has the timing of a book been more important. This unique story provides a fascinating inside look at how a group of players and one attorney strategically outwitted the NFL and the Players Union leadership to score an historic and crucial victory for players rights. The year was 1982, a few courageous men stood up to their powerful administrative adversaries when no one else would during the most turbulent time in the history of professional football. What was at stake then and now again in 2010 is the players ability to earn salaries and benefits that are in line with their contributions to their teams. The authors, former Pro Bowl tight end Billy Joe DuPree and highly respected attorney Spencer Kopf, not only reveal the successful plan that began the end of player exploitation, but they also skillfully compare the peril players faced in 1982 to the heart wrenching situations of present-day, retired union members.
