European Sports Law

- A comparative analysis of the European and American models of sport

Bag om European Sports Law

European Sports Law – A Comparative Analysis of the European and American Model of Sport A comprehensive comparative analysis of the most important legal issues that dominate European sport. The book describes the increasingly stronger involvement in the regulation of European sports by the European Union following the adaptation of the “Sports Article” (Art. 165 TFEU) in the Lisbon Treaty. This development takes place in a time, where the traditional European Model of Sport is challenged by the unprecedented globalization of popular sports around the world. The book also addresses the concept of “Lex Sportiva” and the rising influence on sports law jurisprudence by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Throughout the chapters on competition law, free movement of labor, agent regulation, broadcasting and intellectual property rights, the status quo of European Sports law is compared and analysed with the ongoing development in US sports law jurisprudence in order to outline a possible common trend in international sports law. The book is an updated and revised edition of the comparative sports law analysis that was first published in 2004. Author presentation The author is Lars Halgreen, who is a partner in Johan Schlüter law firm in Copenhagen. Mr. Halgreen is an associate professor in international sports law at the Copenhagen University, and since 2004 he has been appointed as an arbitrator at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
