Cellini's principal patron in Rome, Pope Clement, died, and Cellini had a falling out with his successor, Paul III. Alexandre Dumas ( born Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, 24 July 1802 - 5 December 1870) was a French writer, best known for his historical novels of high adventure. Translated into nearly 100 languages, these have made him one of the most widely read French authors in the world. Many of his novels, including The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Vicomte de Bragelonne were originally published as serials. His novels have been adapted since the early twentieth century for nearly 200 films. Dumas' last novel, The Knight of Sainte-Hermine, unfinished at his death, was completed by a scholar and published in 2005, becoming a bestseller. Urbain Grandier est prêtre dans la petite ville de Loudun. Sa jeunesse, sa beauté, son éloquence et son orgueil lui valent vite l'antipathie puis la haine des quelques personnes importantes de la ville. Accusé d'avoir débauché des femmes et des jeunes filles, il est arrêté mais les preuves imaginaires rassemblées contre lui tombent et il sort absous du procès. Pour son malheur, il fait un retour triomphant dans la ville, ce qui a pour effet de décupler l'hostilité de ses adversaires qui montent une histoire d'envoûtement par le diable sur des religieuses, à qui les exorcismes pratiqués sur elles font révéler qu'Urbain Grandier est responsable. Très vite, cette histoire déborde du cadre de la petite ville et arrive à la cour où le cardinal Richelieu, ayant eu un jour à se plaindre d'Urbain, donne les papiers nécessaires à son arrestation. Malgré les procédures irrégulières et les faux témoignages, il est condamné à être brûlé vif. Il eut auparavant à subir la torture pour qu'il reconnaisse son commerce avec le démon. Il n'avoua jamais et mourut avec courage sur le bûcher.
