Un dipintore di tavole a tempera, che non si era mai arrischiato a lavorare in muro, ereditava il luogo e la tradizione d'un artista come Jacopo di Casentino, che aveva sempre dipinto a fresco, senza lasciar pennelleggiata una tavola. Estratto: ...due archetti a tutto sesto, e custodite dall'aria esterna con quadrelli di vetro colorato, insieme commessi e saldati da liste di piombo. Questa era gran novita per quei tempi, e segnatamente per quei luoghi dentro terra, dove era comune l'uso delle impannate bianche, e soltanto i piu ricchi costumavano farle dipingere a fiori, rabeschi, animali favolosi, ed altre simiglianti capestrerie. Sorgeva da una parete un gran camino di pietra rossa, sulla cui cappa ornata di sculture si ammirava lo stemma dei Torrespina, e nel cui focolare crepitava la stipa, rallegrando del suo calore le membra dei convenuti alle mensa. Per contro, rallegrava gli occhi, facendo bella mostra di se dall'opposta parete, una credenza a scaglioni, coperta d'un ricco tappeto; la quale portava sui gradini piu alti, vagamente ordinato, il vasellame, i taglieri, le idrie, ed altri arredi d'argento per bastare ai bisogni della tavola, e negli inferiori sorreggeva certi barlozzi e fiaschi, col ventre colmo dei preziosi topazii di Candia, di Cipro e di Metelino. La mensa era nel mezzo, disposta a ferro di cavallo, ma coi posti da un lato solo, per modo che gli scalchi, i coppieri e i donzelli, potessero correre lungo il lato interno e servire i convitati. Una bianca tovaglia, i cui lembi scendevano fino a terra, correva lungo la mensa, nel mezzo della quale si vedevano a giusti intervalli candelabri e salsiere di pregevole lavoro, e sul margine esterno, a doppia distanza di quello che oggidi si costuma, i piccoli taglieri, o piatti di argento; presso ognuno dei quali sorgeva una coppa, e si notavano due coltelli e due cucchiai dello stesso metallo. Le forchette a que' tempi erano arnesi sconosciuti, e i due coltelli co' due cucchiai intorno ad un medesimo tondo, significavano che due persone usavano mangiare ad un solo tagliere. Anche una sola tazza bastava per due; cosa che di presente appare disdicevole, ma allora non era, ed anzi aveva il suo pregio. Oh buona usanza del tempo...
