When the Earth drifts into a region of space with different physical laws, the debris of human civilisation begins to self-assemble itself into machine life-forms which swiftly tear technological society apart. They are dubbed Self Replicating Machines: SRMs. There are 5 theories of why they exist, from alien invasion to God. The security forces try to control the technology needed to contain SRMs. When his daughter is kidnapped, a grafitti poet, who is married to a powerful government executive, finds his life and family thrown into chaos which can only be resolved by allying himself with fugitive scientists and ambitious criminals.
his is a story about American terrorists, anarchists, and survivalists, laced with demented conspiracy-theorist viewpoints. The central character, who is God, or thinks he is -considers everyone else a figment of his imagination. He and and his conspiracy-theorist friends are intelligent, pleasant characters, despite their casual violence and off-the-wall beliefs. Likeable people can be heartless killers, if they think their goals are just, and if they convince themselves that bystanders are mere drones of the Alien Masters. The defining plot point is the collapse of the Empire State Building, ultimately blamed on the central character, who also blames himself, since if he is God then he is, after all, responsible for everything.
One man, one dog, one coastline, no clue!
