This is a comprehensive description of Scotland's role in the history of the British Army since the Union of the Crowns in 1603 up to the inception of her one and only remaining Regiment since July 2006, the Royal Regiment of Scotland! I have strived for accuracy throughout and I apologise profusely in advance for any errors that may have crept in. This is an catalogue of carefully selected examples of the supernatural and inexplicable at work. This is a compilation of three stand-alone books by the author which are still available individually. The first of these is not really a story but a researched collection of factual (?) hauntings and haunted places around Scotland. The second one is a purely fictional story in the same genre as the first and the third is also a fictional story but of a different genre; crime, and is set in Scotland.

This is a work of fiction centred on the Scottish Independence Referendum due to take place on the 18th of September 2014, which just so happens to be the exact 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn where King Robert the Bruce sent King Edward II "hame tae think again"! The story in general and all the character's in it are figments of the author's imagination, although most of the locations and places, particularly in Edinburgh, Beauly, Portpatrick and Jersey really do exist! The story revolves mainly around four men; two retired Army Ordinance Corps Officers, one a part time electrician and the other a freelance engineering consultant specializing in demolition, an obscure IRS official with special branch connections, and finally a fanatical renegade hell bent on imposing his will and rule through the enlistment of like minded people. This is a dangerous man operating on the very edges of reality and is completely intolerant of anyone who dares to get in his way or obstruct his ambitions. The resultant clash of personalities and political ethics lend themselves to some very interesting and exciting situations in which our heroes and the villain go head to head on more than one occasion! The eventual outcome of the story however, as with the real situation, is always very much in the balance and will likely remain so until the final reckoning!

A short tale of the supernatural which takes place in middle England in the early 1930's. It (hopefully) stretches the reader's imagination and challenges them to question their beliefs in things that are not so easily, or cannot be, explained! Gracchus Hall and all the characters are strictly figments of the Author's imagination although the general locale is based "somewhere" in the Yorkshire Dales. The secondary theme of a quest for hidden treasure is also completely imaginary and is no more than a means to an end simply to add a bit of structure and direction. D.P.

This is an historical tract about the evolution of India and the events within the sub continent since Babur, a descendant of Genghis Khan, swept down from the Khyber Pass with his Mongol hordes in the early part of the 16th century to subjugate virtually all he surveyed until the arrival of the Europeans in the shape of the HEIC in 1612, and its inevitable evolvement into the British Raj in 1858 and the eventual independence of the country in 1947.

I thought the choice of a sailing ship on the front cover of the book was rather poignant as it seemed to represent both the end of the old and the beginning of the new simultaneously, if indeed, such a thing is possible. Imagine if you will, this vessel anchored in a bay on the west coast of Scotland somewhere, taking on a human cargo of emigrants: some there by choice and others against their will, but all with a common hope that whatever lay ahead of them, it had to be better than what they were leaving behind! Ready then, to up anchor and set sail due west on the morning tide, bound for pastures new probably many thousands of miles away, they sailed into the unknown. Many of them would never get there, finding instead eternal peace in a watery, mid - Atlantic grave! The survivors would come to look upon the hardships and privations of the voyage as a pleasant walk in the park in comparison to what they now faced in this new land which was a life of blood, sweat and tears, to say nothing of relentless back breaking, soul destroying toil! Against all this, the availability of the possible benefits of this new life was legion; as many of them, or if not they themselves, then their children and grand children, were to discover. The fairly small percentage of them, probably about half or maybe less, who survived both the voyage and the first calendar year in this new land, quickly began to see the fruits of their toil come into blossom as life, slowly but surely, became bearable. Over the years, many of their descendants came to be rich and powerful people but few, if any of them, forgot where they came from; to wit, the tartan days, the clan gatherings, the highland games, the piping competitions and the ceilidh's which occur with almost monotonous regularity in so many countries of the world today!

This book is an autobiography of my life on this planet during the last seventy years. It didn't start out that way, it just sort of developed as I went along. Originally I started out to write a novel about a young man leaving home and joining the armed forces to travel the world and expand his mind, at other people's expense of course. At some point fate took over and this is the result, a huge step four! My childhood and subsequent addictions and compulsions are mentioned quite a bit as the book progresses but this is not meant to be a trip down the roads of self-pity and blame, it is more of an exploration of what it was like, what happened, and what it is like now. This contribution to the literary world; is comprised of three previously published books by the author on Amazon UK and which are namely: "Scotland's Military History, ISBN 9781490449227": "The Deracination of Scotland, ISBN 9781517764944" and "The '45, ISBN 9781536841244". The aim of bringing these books together in the one place is to form a `one stop shop', for want of a better description, for anyone with more than a passing interest in Scotland and its history and I sincerely hope it fulfils this purpose! I will presume at this point, for the aforementioned reason, to draw the reader's attention to another book of mine; "The Royal House of Stewart ISBN 9781503024120" which I feel that if read in conjunction with this one, can provide a pretty comprehensive history of Scotland! The third book of this Omnibus, "The '45" is really a mixture of fiction and my imagination as it a story woven round the true historical facts of the 1745 Jacobite rebellion as I imagine it was seen by someone who was actually there; while the first two are strictly historical and factual though both have been `refurbished' in the process to bring them up to date by the inclusion of all the latest available information, hopefully without the loss of any of the original integrity.

This is a purely imaginary tale of the events that followed when a group of middle aged and thoroughly bored ex squaddies, albeit most of them senior NCO's, got together and decided to put some ginger back in their lives again before the wooden overcoats and the fiery furnaces - or the muddy holes in the ground - overtook them permanently! Seizing the moral high ground, (mainly to assuage their consciences), they declare that any financial gain accruing from their rather bold enterprises would be strictly secondary and that the main purpose of it all was to hone their somewhat rusty military skills and provide them with a purpose in life once again, a reason for living, if you will! Needless to say however, things don't quite go according to plan and the verisimilitudous veterans eventually find themselves suspended on the horns of a moral dilemma with no clear indication of which way to fall, and even less of an idea of what to do when they land! However, they deal with these problems as they arise and in the same way as they have dealt with most other problems in their lives - head on, and by forging other strange and unlikely but wholesome, relationships along the way on their journey through life.

The story begins at Glenfinnan in August 1745 with the landing of Prince Charles Edward Stewart and the "seven men of Moidart", an event which has since been commemorated by the erection of a monument on the site; a photograph I took of that monument some years ago now serves to decorate the cover of this book. The narrative, which I have strived to make as historically accurate as possible, goes on from there through many highs and lows via Prestonpans, Carlisle, Manchester, Derby, Falkirk, Stirling and the forts of the `Great Glen' before ending in disaster at Culloden in April '46. I have also strived to include the more obscure events and confrontations between the Jacobites and the Hanoverians such as Ruthven Barracks, Clifton, Inverurie, Moy, Blair Castle, Tongue and Littleferry. The really sad thing about the '45 was that it was in many ways a civil war, men from the same family were to be found on both sides, e.g. James Murray was the 2nd Duke of Atholl and a Hanoverian whilst his brother Lord George Murray was one of, if not the, leading lights of the Jacobites! The same situation was to be found right down the line and it wasn't just Stewart versus Hanover; it was also Scotland against England and, more subtlety, Catholic against Protestant. Scotsman fought Scotsman, Scottish Clan fought Scottish Clan and Scottish regiment fought Scottish regiment, this happened in almost every one of the above mentioned confrontations and is not therefore dissimilar to the present political climate prevalent in the Scotland of today!

It was not always a time of peace and tranquillity, sometimes it was far from it but it was rarely, if ever, boring and encompasses the three major confrontations in British History, Bannockburn, Flodden and Culloden!
