Il presente libro raccoglie due contributi diversi, apparsi rispettivamente nel 1898 e nel 1900. In "Speranze e glorie" emerge il lato più riflessivo di De Amicis, mentre "Le tre capitali: Torino, Firenze, Roma" rappresenta l’accorata disamina degli eventi che hanno condotto, nell’arco di una decina d’anni, alla riunificazione dell’Italia e al costituirsi successivo delle tre città come capitali del neonato Regno d’Italia. L’autore, del resto, ha partecipato in prima persona al Risorgimento, assistendo alla presa di Roma nel 1870. A quei tempi, infatti, De Amicis scrive per la rivista fiorentina L’Italia Militare, ricoprendo nel frattempo il ruolo di sottotenente del Terzo Reggimento Fanteria della Brigata "Piemonte". Divenuto giornalista militare, si trasferisce a Firenze, dove collabora con L’Italia Militare e La Nazione. Dopo il congedo, a partire dal 1872, dedica vari anni ai viaggi, toccando le maggiori capitali europee, Istanbul, il Marocco e il Sudamerica. Dal 1877, tornato definitivamente in Piemonte, dà inizio a una fertile stagione letteraria, culminata nella pubblicazione del suo capolavoro "Cuore" (1886). Gli ultimi anni di vita, funestati dai problemi coniugali e dal suicidio del primogenito, lo vedono anche avvicinarsi al socialismo, collaborare con l’Accademia della Crusca ed entrare nel Consiglio Superiore dell’Istruzione a Roma. Fra le sue molte opere è doveroso citare le più celebri come, ad esempio, "Amore e ginnastica" (1892), "Il mio ultimo amico" (1900) e "L’idioma gentile" (1905).
