I 1840'erne bliver Georg Brandes, en af det moderne gennembruds og litteraturvidenskabens nøglefigurer, født. Med hjælp fra sine dagbøger og breve rekonstruerer han i "LEVNED I. Barndom og første ungdom" sine unge år og livet som student og søn i en velhavende jødisk købmandsfamilie i København. LEVNED I-III er den danske litteraturkritiker Georg Brandes' selvbiografi, der udkom mellem 1905 og 1908, og som kronologisk gennemgår hans livserfaringer, dagbogsuddrag og breve fra mellem 1842 til 1892 – fra tiden som barn, som ung, som rejsende og som forsker.Georg Brandes (1842-1927) er en af de mest indflydelsesrige litteraturkritikere og -teoretikere i dansk litteraturhistorie. Brandes definerede de litterære genrer realisme og naturalisme og er hovedtænkeren bag det moderne gennembrud i Danmark.

Som universitetsprofessor gav Georg Brandes en lang række forelæsninger om europæisk litteratur i 1800-tallet. Disse forelæsninger blev til værket "Hovedstrømninger i det 19. århundredes litteratur", der gør op med det 18. århundrede neoklassicisme og den romantiske litteratur. Dette bind handler om den franske romantik."Hovedstrømninger i det 19. århundredes litteratur" består af seks bind: "Emigrantlitteraturen", "Den romantiske skole i Tyskland", "Reaktionen i Frankrig", "Naturalismen i England," "Den romantiske skole i Frankrig" og "Det unge Tyskland". Værket står i dag som hovedværket inden for Det moderne gennembruds litteratur.Georg Brandes (1842-1927) er den mest indflydelsesrige litteraturkritiker og –teoretiker i dansk litteraturhistorie. Det var netop Georg Brandes, der definerede de litterære genrer realisme og naturalisme, som han stillede i kontrast til senromantikken, som han så som virkelighedsfjern og præget af tom æstetik. Georg brandes er den vigtigste teoretiker bag Det moderne gennembrud.

Der kan være mange grunde til at læse brevvekslingen fra slutningen af 1800-tallet til efter Den russiske Revolution mellem vor egen internationalt berømte litterat, Georg Brandes, og den ligeså navnkundige russiske anarkist og adelsmand, fyrst Peter Kropotkin, som Det Poetiske Bureaus Forlag nu for første gang udgiver i dansk oversættelse (de skrev sammen på fransk) ved Vagn Lyhne & Lis Norup, der også har udstyret bogen med forord og noter. Alene dette forord, med beskrivelse af de to mænds respektive baggrunde og fortællingen om det politiske mord, der første til korrespondancen, er spændende som en, ja … kriminalroman. Brevene beskriver både de to mænds politiske tanker og overvejelser og de hændelser i dagspressen, som de tager farve af.

Et udvalg af Georg Brandes' artikler om litteratur, kultur, politik og det, der ellers optog den evigt engagerede intellektuelle i hans mangfoldige virke. Udvalget er foretaget og indledt af Georg Brandes-biografen Jørgen Knudsen.

The literature produced in France between the years 1824 and 1828 is important and admirable. After the upheavals of the Revolution, the wars of the Empire, and the lassitude of the reign of Louis XVIII., there arose a young generation that applied itself with eager enthusiasm to those highest intellectual pursuits which had so long been neglected. During the Revolution and the wars of Napoleon the youths of France had had other vocations than the reformation of literature and art. The best energies of the nation had been diverted into the channels of politics, military enterprise, and civil administration. Now a great volume of intellectual force which had long been confined was suddenly set free. The period of the restored Bourbon kings and the Monarchy of July may be defined as that of the decisive appearance of the bourgeoisie on the historical stage. With the fall of Napoleon the industrial period of history begins. Confining our attention to France, we observe that the new division of the national property which had been made during the Revolution, and which it had been Napoleon's economic mission to vindicate to the rest of Europe, now began to produce its natural consequences.

And with the same he would feel two large hands placed over his ears and the arms belonging to them would shoot straight up into the air. That was delightful.
