Hans-Georg Gadamers (1900-2002) Wahrheit und Methode, der udkom første gang i 1960, er ikke blot en moderne klassiker inden for hermeneutikken og fortolkningsteorien, men har også en central placering i den aktuelle filosofiske debat.  Gadamers vigtigste inspirationskilde er Martin Heideggers analyse af den menneskelige væremåde, som han overfører på sproget, kunsterfaringen og den humanvidenskabelige erkendelse. Denne proces foregår ifølge Gadamer som en "dialog", en bestandig vekslen mellem spørgsmål og svar. Gadamer er selv hele tiden i dialog med den filosofiske tradition, hvilket resulterer i nogle originale nyfortolkninger af bl.a. Platon, Aristoteles, Kant og Hegel.
