Zu seinen Forschungsschwerpunkten gehorten die Literatur des Jungen Deutschland und der Goethe-Zeit sowie die Geschichte der Zensur und die Bibliographie. Spannend und anschaulich wird in zahlreichen Kapiteln die Geschichte der Nordpolexpeditionen erzählt. Houbens Kulturgeschichte der Zensur aus dem Jahre 1926 setzt um die Zeit Friedrichs des Großen Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts an und widmet sich so interessanten Episoden wie der Zensur von Schillers Räubern, Goethes Faust oder etwa der Werke Heines, um sich dann dem späteren 19. Jahrhundert zuzuwenden und mit einer unterhaltsamen Sammlung von „Zensurgrotesken aus zwei Jahrhunderten" zu schließen. Spätestens ab dem Beginn des Goldenen Zeitalters der Antarktis-Forschung, also ab Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts, gab es Bestrebungen, den antarktischen Kontinent zu erforschen und dabei auch näher an den Pol zu kommen. Die ersten Menschen, die den geographischen Südpol erreichten, waren der Norweger Roald Amundsen und seine Expeditionsgruppe. Sie erreichten den Südpol im Dezember 1911. Amundsens Konkurrent beim Wettlauf um das erste Erreichen des Südpols war der Engländer Robert Falcon Scott. Er und seine Mannschaft erreichten den Pol erst einen Monat nach Amundsens Gruppe im Januar 1912.
