The author was a member of a Russian scientific expedition which explored the then little known boreal and arctic regions of Siberia, and describes the lives of the natives they encountered, travels by dog-sled, dealing with the many difficulties in travel, including wild extremes in temperature, and provides an insightful overview of the region.
