Racine entretient une relation tendue avec Molière, lui aussi à la cour. Suite à «Phèdre» en 1677, et des disputes, il abandonne peu à peu le théâtre, à regret, pour se livrer à l'historiographie. Ses dernière pièces ( «Esther», 1688, et «Athalie», 1691) sont quant à elles commandées par la femme du Roi.

Ce livre contient trois des pièces les plus célèbres de Racine: Andromaque, Britannicus, et Athalie. Écrit entre 1667 et 1691, ces tragédies explore les thèmes universels de l'amour, la jalousie, l'ambition et le pouvoir. Bérénice est une tragédie en cinq actes (comportant respectivement 5, 5, 4, 8 et 7 scènes) et en vers (1506 alexandrins) de Racine représentée pour la première fois le 21 novembre 1670 à l'Hôtel de Bourgogne, avec sa nouvelle actrice vedette, Marie Champmeslé dans le rôle-titre. L'épître dédicatoire est adressée à Colbert. Racine a voulu conserver l'image idéalisée d'un Titus renonçant à l'amour pour obéir à la raison d'État, qui s'est installée dans l'imaginaire sous l'influence de l'historien Suétone. On peut voir ainsi dans cette tragédie comme un reflet de la monarchie absolue et de l'exemplarité de Louis XIV. La princesse Palatine, puis Voltaire se feront l'écho de l'analogie qui était née dans l'esprit de certains contemporains entre cette histoire et la renonciation fameuse du jeune Louis XIV à Marie Mancini lors du Traité des Pyrénées, qui lui avait imposé le mariage avec l'Infante d'Espagne.

En écrivant Les Plaideurs en 1668, Racine s'est inspiré des Guêpes d'Aristophane mais en a retiré toute la portée politique. Mithridate est une tragédie en cinq actes de Jean Racine. Le sujet est tiré de l'histoire ancienne. Mithridate VI Eupator (132-63 av. J.-C.) régna sur le royaume du Pont, autour de la mer Noire. Célèbre pour s'être progressivement accoutumé aux poisons par mithridatisation, il résista longtemps aux Romains, allant jusqu'à imaginer un projet d'invasion de l'Italie. Il finit par se donner la mort après avoir été trahi par son propre fils. Racine réunit plusieurs épisodes de la vie de Mithridate en une seule journée et, comme à son habitude, donne une grande importance aux intrigues amoureuses. Mais la dimension épique demeure plus présente que dans d'autres tragédies. Sur le plan du style, la pièce se distingue par un grand nombre de longs discours et de monologues. Mithridate fut la tragédie préférée d'un autre grand roi, Louis XIV, ainsi que de Charles XII de Suède. Aux siècles suivants, la pièce se fera de plus en plus rare sur scène. C'est aujourd'hui l'une des pièces de Racine les moins jouées.

Comme Eschyle dans Les Perses, Racine a pris le sujet de Bajazet dans l'histoire contemporaine tout en prenant soin de choisir une civilisation lointaine, l'Empire ottoman. En 1635, le sultan Mourad IV (devenu Amurat chez Racine) a fait exécuter ses frères Bajazet (Bayezid) et Orcan, rivaux potentiels. Racine s'inspire de ce fait en centrant l'action sur le personnage de Bajazet. Il développe aussi plusieurs intrigues amoureuses dans le sérail. L'action est particulièrement complexe et ne peut se dénouer que par une succession de meurtres et de suicides.
