Þetta víðfræga verk Jónasar Hallgrímssonar kom út í síðasta árgangi Fjölnis árið 1847. Sagan lýsir íslenskri sveitamenningu á fyrri hluta 19. Aldar og segir frá ungum systkinum. Grasaferð er líka þroskasaga ungs drengs sem upplifir ótta og hugrekki. Jónas Hallgrímsson fæddist 16. Nóvember 1807. Dagur íslenskrar tungu er haldinn á fæðingardag hans á hverju ári. Hann var skáld, náttúrufræðingur og mikill unnandi íslenskunnar. Hann bjó einnig til fjölmörg íslensk nýyrði til þess að varðveita tungumálið.
