Zu Studienzwecken verbrachte er auch einige Jahre in Deutschland. Zurück in Spanien begann Ortega seine literarische Arbeit in Zeitschriften und Zeitungen und wirkte 1931 an der spanischen Verfassung mit. Am 18. Oktober 1955 verstarb er in Madrid. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten spanischen Denker des 20. Jahrhundert.
