Er befasste sich mit der Geschichte der Philosophie und vertrat als Kantforscher die Marburger Schule. Vorländer entwarf seine Geschichte der Philosophie für Studenten und gebildete Laien. Vorländer wollte "die ganze Geschichte der Philosophie" und des Denkens in einer begrenzten Darstellung zusammenfassen und sich dabei auf das Allgemeine, bzw. das Generalisierbare beschränken. Um den hohen Anspruch erfüllen zu können, muss Geschichtsschreibung ''die Tatsachen gewissenhaft erforschen'' und dabei "nach den Grundsätzen kritisch-historischer Methode" vorgehen. Kulturgeschichtliche und wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Aspekte waren zu berücksichtigen, sowie systematische und biographische Faktoren. Ein Philosophiehistoriker musste Philosoph sein. Auf diese Weise sollte ein Höchstmaß an Objektivität erreicht werden. 1924 veröffentlichte er für Laien eine Volkstümliche Geschichte der Philosophie, die auch als Nachdruck im Handel erhältlich ist.

Der Neukantianer Karl Vorländer, dessen monumentale Biographie "Immanuel Kant. Der Mann und das Werk" (1924 bei Meiner erschienen) maßgeblich das Bild Kants im 20. Jahrhundert geprägt hat, veröffentlichte 1929 auch eine Biographie über Karl Marx. Denn Vorländer stand der Sozialdemokratie nahe und vertrat, wie viele Kantianer der Marburger Schule, einen ethischen Sozialismus. Bereits 1904 hatte er in einem Vortrag über ¿Kant und Marx¿ den Kategorischen Imperativ als grundlegendes Prinzip des Sozialismus zu begründen versucht. Vorländers lebendig geschriebene, handliche Marx-Biographie, die zahlreiche damals neue Quellen auswertet, will eine von ¿parteilicher Voreingenommenheit¿ freie, ¿unbefangene Schilderung¿ von Marx¿ Leben geben. Der Autor positioniert sein Werk zwischen Mehrings zehn Jahre früher erschienener Biographie (die er schätzt) und Sombarts Werk über den Sozialismus (das er scharf ablehnt). Die Biographie verfolgt in drei großen Abschnitten Marx¿ Jugend und Studienjahre sowie die Freundschaft und Zusammenarbeit mit Engels bis zum "Kommunistischen Manifest", die Zeit nach der gescheiterten Revolution bis 1870 sowie Marx¿ Altersjahre bis zu seinem Tod 1883. Ein vierter Teil wirft einen Blick auf Marx¿ Bedeutung für die Gegenwart. Vorländer will vor allem einen Eindruck von dessen Persönlichkeit und seiner politischen Entwicklung vermitteln; eine Auseinandersetzung mit Marx¿ ökonomischem Werk nimmt er bewusst nicht vor.
