They get along well and spend many more days boating, with Rat teaching Mole the ways of the river.... The novel is notable for its mixture of mysticism, adventure, morality, and camaraderie.

Grahame's reminiscences are notable for their conception "e;of a world where children are locked in perpetual warfare with the adult 'Olympians' who have wholly forgotten how it feels to be young"e;--a theme later explored by J. M. Barrie and other authors.
The story centres around four characters: Rat, Mole, Badger, and Toad who live in pastoral England during the Edwardian era. Originally adapted from bedtime stories Grahame used to tell his young son, "The Wind in the Willows" has become a classic of children's literature enjoyed by millions the world over.

A timeless collection of stories told with a focus on children’s perspectives. Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows is an enduring classic of children’s literature, and has been beloved by readers of all ages since its publication in 1908. In addition to the delightful tale about the adventures of Mole, Ratty, Badger, and Toad—illustrated in full color by Arthur Rackham—this volume includes more than two dozen short stories from Grahame’s collections The Golden Age (1895) and Dream Days (1898), the latter of which contains Grahame’s most famous short story, “The Reluctant Dragon.” With an emphasis on childhood perspectives and often devoid of adult sentimentalities, Grahame’s stories focus on the concerns of youth—a focus that makes these stories endure in the hearts and minds of today's readers.
Hailed as one of the most enduringly popular works of the twentieth century, The Wind in the Willows is a classic of magical fancy and enchanting wit. Penned in lyrical prose, the adventures and misadventures of the book's intrepid quartet of heroes—Mole, Water Rat, Badger, and, of course, the incorrigible Toad—raise fantasy to the level of myth. Reflecting the freshness of childhood wonder, the story still offers adults endless sophistication, substance, and depth. The animals' world embodies the author's wry, whimsical, and unfailingly inventive imagination. It is a world that succeeding generations of both adult and young readers have found irresistible. But why say more? To use the words of the estimable Mr. Toad himself: "Travel, change, interest, excitement!...Come inside.”With an Introduction by Luanne Rice
