Hugo is a bold little hedgehog who likes to speak in French. Hedgehogs usually go out after dark, but Hugo decides he wants to explore in daylight, which is not wise. Inspecting his garden, he comes across a squirrel who doesn't understand him, a toad who gives him good advice and, finally, he finds Hatty who helps him solve a very irritating problem.

Gardens at night are mysterious and busy places. Hatty never knows whom she will meet when she leaves home. In this book her moonlight encounters give us an insight into life in a garden after dark. It must seem quite a scary place for a little hedgehog as she goes in search of food, but we know she has a coat of quills to protect her.
