El suicidio. Estudio de sociología (1897) es una de las más importantes obras del sociólogo francés Émile Durkheim que trata sobre el suicidio como fenómeno social. Con ello rompe la tendencia tradicional de considerarlo como un fenómeno estrictamente individual y por ende sólo como objeto de la psicología o de la moral. Como su nombre indica, es un estudio sobre el suicidio, pero la gran novedad es que Durkheim considera éste desde el punto de vista de la tasa anual de suicidios que existe en varios países europeos desde la sexta década del siglo XIX. Esto es, desde un punto de vista social. Analizando esas tasas, se percata de que suelen mantenerse constantes o con cambios muy leves a lo largo de prolongados períodos. Igualmente, los picos o los valles acusados en las gráficas corresponden con acontecimientos como guerras o depresiones económicas. También se percata de que la tasa de suicidios es diferente de unos países y de unas comunidades a otras. El suicidio es ante todo un hecho social y sus causas son antes sociales que individuales o netamente psicológicas. Durkheim no sólo estudia las diferencias según religión sino según matrimonio, hijos, grupos profesionales, género, edad, grupos políticos, tipo de sociedad o de medio social, etc. Ello le permite ver las diferentes causas sociales del suicidio, que son las determinantes, y establecer para cada tipo de causa un tipo de suicidio diferente.

Contrairement aux thèses en vigueur originant l'histoire de sciences sociales dans les courants anglais et allemand du I9 ème, Durkheim pense qu'elle est née dans la pensée philosophique française du 18e, et que c'est Montesquieu qui en a été le pionnier. Il a établi les principes de la science nouvelle, particulièrement en étudiant les lois qui sont un fait social spécifique mais présent dans toutes les institutions, et selon une méthode qui est transposable. Sa contribution ne consiste pas tant dans l'élaboration de savoirs complets actualisables -(les instruments nécessaires à l'exploration étaient alors rudimentaires)- mais parce qu'il a su lui donner un caractère scientifique en élaborant son objet, sa nature, sa méthode, autant d'éléments déterminés sur lesquels elle s'établira comme science sociale.
