Djævelen lover at give den lærde, men verdensfjerne Faust ubegrænset indsigt og den evige sandhed, hvis han afsværger Gud, men kaster ham ud i lystne eventyr, viser ham den ægte kærlighed og får ham til sidst endog til at begå mord, alt som midler til at opnå den fuldkomne personlige frihed, som er Djævelens forestilling om sandheden. Vil han også til sidst sejre i kampen om Fausts sjæl? "Goethe har allerede skrevet Faust. Men han har ikke af den grund eneret på historien, eller kan udelukke andre fra at skrive den. Denne Faust er hele menneskehedens arvegods." Sådan skrev Lenau i et brev til digteren og lægen Justinus Kerner i marts 1833, og selv om hans udgave måske ikke er så kendt som Goethes, hører den til den tyske litteraturs klassikere.Den foreliggende udgave fra 1883 er den eneste danske oversættelse. Vi har moderniseret retskrivningen, men af hensyn til rim og rytme er enkelte gamle bøjningsformer bevaret.
