Das lateinische Wort "Radis" oder "Wurzeln" bedeutet "an der Wurzel des Grundsätzlichen". Es zeigt, dass ein Radikaler eine Person ist, die einen grundlegenden politischen und sozialen Wandel herbeiführen möchte. Radikalisierung ist also eine Denkweise, bei der Menschen extreme Ansichten und Überzeugungen annehmen und bereit sind, für politische und religiöse Ziele gewalttätige Maßnahmen zu ergreifen. Wilner und Duboulos definieren Radikalisierung wie folgt: "Radikalisierung ist ein persönlicher Prozess, bei dem sich Menschen extreme politische, soziale und religiöse Ideen und Bestrebungen zu eigen machen und bei dem das Erreichen bestimmter Ziele die Anwendung von willkürlicher Gewalt rechtfertigt; es handelt sich dabei sowohl um einen mentalen als auch um einen emotionalen Prozess, der den Einzelnen auf gewalttätiges Verhalten vorbereitet und dazu motiviert. Interessant ist, dass die Radikalisierung in der Anfangsphase nicht immer zu Gewalt führt. Der langsame Prozess der Radikalisierung kann sich also vollziehen, ohne dass man sich des Ernstes der Lage bewusst ist. Im zeitgenössischen Diskurs über religiöse Radikalisierung wird oft angenommen, dass die Religion im Mittelpunkt der Radikalisierung steht. The Latin word ¿Radis¿ or ¿roots¿ means buried at the root of fundamental. It shows that a radical is a person who wishes to bring the fundamental, political and social change and therefore radicalization is a mindset by which people adopt extreme views and beliefs, being prepared to take violent measures for political and religious gains. Wilner and Duboulos define radicalization as the following: ¿Radicalization is a personal process in which individuals adopt extreme political, social and religious ideas and aspirations and where the attainment of particular goals justifies the use of indiscriminate violence, it is both a mental and emotional process that prepares and motivates and individual to pursue violent behavior. It is interesting to note that radicalization does not always lead to violence in the initial stages. So, the slow process of radicalization may take place while there is no realization of the gravity of the situation.
