Elle est publiée en 1634 par François Targa; le privilège est du 9 mars, l'achevé d'imprimé est du 13 mars. Probablement jouée au Théâtre du Marais par la troupe de Montdory, elle reçut un très bon accueil du public.

Cette tragédie a été traitée en grec par Euripide, et en latin par Sénèque; et c'est sur leur exemple que je me suis autorisé à en mettre le lieu dans une place publique, quelque peu de vraisemblance qu'il y ait à y faire parler des rois, et à y voir Médée prendre les desseins de sa vengeance. Elle en fait confidence, chez Euripide, à tout le choeur, composé de Corinthiennes sujettes de Créon, et qui devaient être du moins au nombre de quinze, à qui elle dit hautement qu'elle fera périr leur roi, leur princesse et son mari, sans qu'aucune d'elles ait la moindre pensée d'en donner avis à ce prince. Pour Sénèque, il y a quelque apparence qu'il ne lui fait pas prendre ces résolutions violentes en présence du choeur, qui n'est pas toujours sur le théâtre, et n'y parle jamais aux autres acteurs; mais je ne puis comprendre comme, dans son quatrième acte, il lui fait achever ses enchantements en place publique; et j'ai mieux aimé rompre l'unité exacte du lieu, pour faire voir Médée dans le même cabinet où elle a fait ses charmes, que de l'imiter en ce point.

Nicomède met en scène deux frères, Nicomède et Attale, nés du même père, Prusias, roi de Bithynie. Attale, fils issu de l'union avec Arsinoé, seconde épouse de Prusias, a été élevé à Rome d'où il est revenu récemment. Arsinoé, ambitieuse qui règne à la cour et domine son mari, déteste Nicomède et veut placer son jeune fils sur le trône à la place de l'aîné. De plus, Laodice, jeune reine d'Arménie confiée à Prusias par son père, est aimée des deux frères mais porte sa préférence sur Nicomède. Le peuple se révolte et réclame Nicomède comme roi, celui-ci ayant été victime d'Arsinoé qui l'éloigne en le mettant aux mains de Rome, en la personne de Flaminius. Cependant, un inconnu met fin à sa captivité. Prusias et Flaminius préférant fuir, Arsinoé se retrouve seule lors du retour du prince-héros. Les deux autres décideront in extremis de revenir pour mourir avec elle mais Nicomède choisit de leur pardonner...
