""The Close of the Middle Ages 1273 to 1494 V3"" is a historical book written by Sir Richard Lodge. It covers the period of time from 1273 to 1494, which marks the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance. The book provides a detailed account of the political, social, and cultural changes that occurred during this period in Europe. It discusses the rise of powerful monarchies, the development of the Church, the growth of commerce and trade, and the emergence of new ideas and philosophies. The author also explores the impact of major events such as the Hundred Years' War, the Black Death, and the invention of the printing press. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of Europe during the late Middle Ages.1928. From the Preface: The period treated in this volume is one of unique interest and significance in the history of Europe. Within these two centuries the political and social conditions of the so-called Middle Ages came to an end, and the states system of Modern Europe took its rise. But the importance of the period is more than equaled by the almost superhuman difficulty of narrating its events in anything like orderly and intelligible sequence. Such unity as had been given to Western Europe by the mediaeval Empire and Papacy disappeared with the Great Interregnum in the middle of the thirteenth century; and such unity as was afterwards supplied by the growth of formal international relations cannot be said to begin before the invasion of Naples by Charles VIII of France at the end of the fifteenth century. In the interval between these two dates there is apparent chaos, and only the closest attention can detect the germs of future order in the midst of the struggle of dying and nascent forces. It is easy to find evidence of astounding intellectual activity and instances of brilliant political and military achievement, but the dominant characteristic of the age is its diversity, and it is hard to find any principle of coordination. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
