  • - My Holocaust Story
    af Leon Gleicher
    172,95 kr.

While many Holocaust memoirs have flooded the market in recent years, Leon Gleicher's "From Prisoner to Partisan" is a unique contribution that encompasses the complete story of the Holocaust generation. Gleicher begins with the story of everyday life in his small Galician village, comparing it to the more open society of the larger nearby city of Turka. He then covers his life under the Soviet occupation, a relatively benign time compared to the horrors to come. Gleicher's life under the Nazis is divided into three sections: The Sambor ghetto, with its starvation, disease, and murders; his year hiding in the forests near his home, being aided by his Ukrainian neighbors; and his transformation from a fleeing fugitive into a partisan fighter. As varied as those experiences were, Gleicher goes beyond that to describe the post-War activities of the survivors, a topic now being given special emphasis at Yad Vashem. Gleicher discusses life in the Fohrenwald Displaced Persons Camp, and, more importantly, how he immigrated to the United States and built a new life there. A fascinating coda to the book is his return to his birthplace and the ghetto over 50 years after the War accompanied by his wife and children. A bibliography gives the reader resources to delve further into Gleicher's story.

Central Africa. A mining compound on the curve of a river. A young couple arrive. John is stepping up to a major opportunity in his career, taking over as mine manager. Angela has decided to join him. Big Bend is comfortable, and the people are friendly. At worst, it could be a little tedious. Nothing changes here. Jungle extends for hundreds of miles all around. They sip their drinks and watch the brown river sliding by. John has been sent to replace Yageman. Everyone is relieved at the news. Yageman built the mine from scratch, placing the first charge that blew apart the jungle. Nobody should stay in this place for as long as he has. Yageman leaves behind a profitable mine, and a secure compound. The river linking them to the coast will always flow, slowly and dependably as ever. Even a wilderness can be predictable. But then the hydro plant that powers everything is sabotaged. Without electricity, the compound quickly becomes unbearable. A young girl goes missing. Suspicions abound. Even at the best of times, keeping up appearances can be difficult. Who knows what people will do next?

  • - and the Good News of the Kingdom of God
    af Paul Pomerville Phd
    207,95 kr.

Culture Blind Evangelicals and the Good News of the Kingdom of God examines how Western culture obscures the dynamic experiential nature of the gospel in evangelicalism. The virtual absence of the kingdom of God theme in evangelical circles, and silence on the ongoing charismatic ministry of the Holy Spirit today are evidence of the powerful impact of a rationalistic western culture. Expositions of Matthew's Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles focus on Jesus' and the apostles' emphasis on "the good news of the kingdom of God," and on the impact of Jewish culture on First Century Christians. Those lessons on culture not only help the reader understand, in layman's terms, the impact of western culture on their own Christian experience, but the lessons also provide a major key for understanding the New Testament documents. The book challenges evangelicals to open their eyes to the good news of the kingdom of God "as it was," "as it is," and "how it will be" in the 21st Century.

  • - The Vietnam War in Princeton 1965-1975
    af Lee Neuwirth
    217,95 kr.

From the former Deputy Director of IDA/CRD (Institute for Defense Analyses/Communications Research Division) comes a fascinating background of the anti-war, anti-IDA demonstrations held at Princeton during the Vietnam War. Who were those engaged in debate and what were they thinking? In Nothing Personal, Lee Neuwirth, who was anti-war, yet fiercely loyal to his country, and caught in the midst of what proved to be aggressive tactics, reveals much about the machinations and attitudes on both sides. It was a time when passions ran high and the definition of patriotism was vehemently argued. As Neuwirth writes, The build-up to the serious, angry, festive, electric demonstrations of 1967-1972 was slow, steady, and in retrospect, inevitable. The author juxtaposes sit-ins and activism with his personal life, including his public debate with Daniel Ellsberg and efforts taken to protect his family. For anyone seeking an impartial historical perspective of an extraordinary time, this is it.

With a unique and altogether fetching style, JC & Angus 1782 by new author Dwight Harris is historic fiction as its absolute finest. Epic and sweeping, this story has style, character, and tail-and not necessarily in that order. Charming and robust, it is an amazing account of life in America after the Revolutionary War as told by a Cairn Terrier named Angus and his owner JC Sundin, a staunch Presbyterian Scot, who owns and operates the Happenstance Inn and spends his spare time helping old friends and the new government. Highlighting life near Pennsylvania and Virginia, after the war is won with Ben Franklin in London negotiating a peace agreement, the rest of the country walks an unsteady path to secure amity and accord. At the epicenter of this burgeoning reconciliation is the Continental congress being helped by a thoughtful JC and his furry fierce-witted, four-legged friend, Angus.
