This work evaluates Neanderthal patterns of behaviour in Mediterranean France in a broad-scale regional, integrative and comparative way. Two main questions are addressed: first, to what extent can we document chronological, spatial and other forms of variability within the Middle Palaeolithic record of Mediterranean France, and what is the significance of these patterns? Second, to what extent is the Middle Palaeolithic in Mediterranean France similar to that found in southwestern France, and to what extent do the models of Mousterian variability developed in this classic area apply in Mediterranean France? A total of 79 sites (237 assemblages), dating from 35,000 to 18,000 ya, are analysed in order to address these questions. As part of an integrative perspective, a number of parameters are examined, principally lithic typology, basic lithic technology, faunal and raw material information. The results show that Mediterranean France cannot be viewed simply as an extension of southwestern France.
In the latter part of the fifteenth century the Inka Empire was forming in the Andes Mountains of South America. By the time of the European invasion in A. D. 1532, the Inka state covered a territory over 5,000 km. long from the present-day Colombian-Ecuadorian border to a point south of Santiago, Chile. The rapid Inka domination of much of the Andes left many notable archaeological records, one of which is the site Inkawasi which was used in conquest of the Canete Valley on the coast of Peru. This monograph reports archaeological research at Inkawasi.
This monograph is a contribution to the study of the material evidence for contacts between the mainland Near East and the east Mediterranean World between 900 and 600 BC. An orientalizing phase in the cultural development of archaic Greece has long been recognized and consequently much studied, not least through objects of Eastern manufacture and copies of them found in the Greek world. This research has not until now included a systematic study of the evidence provided by copper alloy and iron helmets. This catalogue and commentary assembles all known evidence outside the mainland Near East for the presence and possible cultural and military significance of Oriental helmets in the Greek World, including Cyprus. Its examination of these helmets adds to the general picture of the period, providing a framework for the study not only of helmets, but also of other material indicators of eastern contacts with Greece at this time.
