There is an argument that the study of British Politics is in decline; that it is being surpassed by much more sexy subjects such as globalisation or international relations, or regional studies - be it Europe, the Americas or South East Asia. Despite this gloomy outlook, there is a need for the study of British Politics. Rather than it being the entire degree, it might need to be part of a bigger package - be it in Politics or Government. It is also part of the study of Citizenship - and a key component at that. Yet the study of British Politics should go much further. Somebody studying business, for example, ought to have an awareness of the fundamentals of British Politics. Such knowledge may give a greater awareness of the role and function of the public sector, or sources of start-up funds for new businesses. The list goes on. So the study of British Politics is very important. This book attempts to encapsulate much of what is taught in a Politics syllabus. It also includes other areas of politics, which students of British Politics might not consider important. To those studying law, history, business and citizenship - to name but four subjects - this book draws in aspects of your subjects and links them to the politics of the United Kingdom.

This text is aimed at higher education students and reflective mature readers who have an interest in the ideas of pioneering sociologists and social philosophers. The focus of attention is on three nineteenth century theorists, Henri Saint Simon, August Comte and Herbert Spencer. The book builds a clear understanding of important concepts of this era, and devotes chapters to providing a social and historical context to the formative ideas of the theorists regarding their interpretations of history, the direction of social change and their utopian images of the future. The English social theorist Herbert Spencer is taken as the key figure. The approach adopted is not to scrutinise the scientific validity or otherwise of Spencer 's works, but rather to: - Provide an English historical context for understanding Spencer's view of social change and future utopia. - Demonstrate some of the more immediate influences shaping Spencer's social outlook. - Present a backdrop to Spencer's social theory with reference to the theories of social change developed by the French theorists Henri Saint Simon and Auguste Comte, themselves located within a French historical context. For those who would like to be eased into this area at a more introductory level, you are recommended to make a preliminary reading of Chapter 2 of John T. Pullinger 's text Sociological Thinking A new Introduction published by Cambridge Academic in 2014.
