The R-word has been used against us as hate speech for decades. Neurotypicals have tried to dictate our motives, experiences, and words without stepping back to look at how taking the word away does nothing to take away their attitudes behind it. While leftist culture has abandoned the word "retarded," we are still treated with the same hatefulness and discrimination implicit in that word. In the third installment of this zine series, contributors muse over the interactions between autistic people and authority.

Fireweed, as the full title implies, is all about introducing your kids to plants. It's about teaching young children the joy of gathering edibles, and making them into candies, teas, jellies, or even medicines. There's tips for going on plant walks, and suggestions for good introductory plants like ginger, mint, and marshmallow. There are recipes for prickly pear crisp, catnip tea, and simple fermented herbal infusions. The authors conduct a couple interviews with parents about their experiences sharing plants with their children. This zine is really inspiring.

The first time that I met my favorite autistic mentee, she walked right up to me, declaring "You don't look like prey!" We discussed at length how we are both consistently perceived as vulnerable from our appearances, body language, and mannerisms. I had never thought about this as a trait of autism until I began to research the relationships of crime statistics and autism to find that we are frequently victims. When I looked up the meaning of "getting taken advantage of," I had a startling discovery. The phrase has two components, someone using you unfairly for their own benefit and you being complicit and accepting in this dynamic. According to this definition, being robbed on the street is not being "taken advantage of." While everyone experiences these types of encounters, it seems that so many neurodiverse people are taken advantage of because they are easily fooled into being complicit in these exchanges. This zine is a forum of advice and stories to explain the neurodiverse experience so that we can be seen as real, whole people. One theme that kept coming up in conversations with neurodiverse people as "being taken advantage of." Every neurodiverse person seems to be a survivor of abuse, whether that be emotional, financial, sexual, physical, or mental. These stories humanize those experiences and provide context, humor, and real solutions for how to overcome them. Ultimately, living in our society it becomes difficult not to internalize ableism and see ourselves as lesser, rather than just different.

Minot may only be the fourth largest city in North Dakota, but it's a key player in the punk ecosphere. Home to the longest continuous scene in the Dakotas, it has long served as an important stop for touring bands. Local teens grow up, start bands, and instead of moving to larger cities, take the reigns on their scene to keep the magic going. From finding venues to booking shows, they strengthen the community by showing each other and younger generations that life can truly be what you make of it.

Alcohol never seemed like it was a big problem for the author... until one terrible day when he made a drunken mistake that killed two people. In prison, he stopped drinking but it took years to process what he'd done and how his choices had impacted those around him for his whole adult life. Being forced to go to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings was a source of resentment rather than support until he came up with an alternative program that had room for his skepticism about the role of outside power, agency, and religion in his life. As a punk who always carves his own path, Spock shares those steps to taking contol of your life here, as well as his own cautionary tale.

"The more you are willing to do, the more he will do in return." That about sums it up. We are all selfish in bed, when it comes down to it, apparently. At least in the eyes of this author. While I haven't attempted the auto-fellatio test or the ever-awkward, "Hey, I need help reviewing this zine" line, this is a solidly-compelling read. Aside from the obvious skills, there's the lesson here in understanding that people come in different shapes and sizes and how that will benefit your relationship skills out of bed. I could summarize the actual steps to the trick but what fun is that? Get the zine!

Neurodiversity occupies a similar place in the public consciousness as gay rights did in the 1970s: most people on the outside don't understand it and The Borg demand our assimilation! A necessary contribution to the dialogue around neurology, this zine features advice and exploratory narratives about how to accept the neurodiverse experience. Even the less divergent can understand us and see us as real, whole people. Featuring comics, narrative, advice, and origin stories that all teach how to better interact/collaborate/interface with us, this zine is the beginning of a social movement towards a future where people can be treated like, well, people. We find neuroatypical people inspiring and we think you could learn from our stories too!

"Don't drink the Kool-Aid!" Most people have heard the phrase, but like so many famous phrases, its origin is a lie. Did Jim Jones lead a cult which killed themselves at his command, or was that story concocted to cover up something more sinister? One fact to consider is that the local coroner reported that the people of Jonestown were murdered, although this was ignored by the American press for unknown reasons. Another fact is that the guy who bought the land for Jonestown was a CIA operative. Also, Jim's best friend from childhood was a CIA torturer. And the "cult" consisted largely of kidnapped slave labor--mostly Black women. And yet this still barely scratches the surface of a conspiracy that provides a roadmap of how special operations are executed.

"All therapy is at some level about mindfulness," writes Dr. Faith. She offers encouragement here to make a regular time to slow down and take a close look at exactly what is happening in your body and mind, so that you can gain better understanding and healing. She starts by disambiguating the often-interchangeably-used terms mindfulness and meditation, and offers exercises for each practice (and some that combine both), then shows what is scientifically happening in our brains when we do these things. There's a section of advice for scientific practice, so you aren't sitting there trying to meditate and just getting triggered. And then there are nine different exercises, with descriptions of how to do them, and what situations they might be especially effective for--for instance one is good for migraines and another is especially suited for managing anger and aggression. Some of the exercises come from her Buddhist practice, but all are presented in a non-religious manner and with accommodations for various needs.
