Oracles of Reason

Bag om Oracles of Reason

Oracles of Reason is a philosophical treatise written by Charles Blount, originally published in 1693. The book is a critical examination of religion and the role of reason in understanding the world. Blount argues that reason, rather than divine revelation or superstition, is the only reliable guide to truth. He critiques various religious beliefs, including Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, and argues that they are based on myths and legends rather than historical fact. Blount also discusses the nature of God, the soul, and the afterlife, and suggests that these concepts are products of human imagination rather than objective reality. The book was controversial at the time of its publication and was condemned by religious authorities as blasphemous. However, it is now recognized as an important work in the history of philosophy and religious criticism.1693. This volume consists of several letters relative to: a vindication of Dr. Burnet's Archiologia; the 7th and 8th chapters of the same; of Mose's description of the original state of man; Dr. Burnet's appendix of the Brachmins religion; account of the Deist's religion; of the immortality of the soul; concerning the Arrians, Trinitarians and councils; that felicity consists in pleasure; of fate and fortune; of the original of the Jews; lawfulness of marrying two sisters successively; political account of the subversion of Judaism and original of the Millennium; of the auguries of the ancients; natural religion as opposed to divine revelation; that the soul is matter; and that the world is eternal.
