The only religious unit in American military history. The Mormon battalion was unique in federal service, having been recruited solely from one religious body and having a religious title as the unit designation. Serving in the Mexican War, they marched across the Southwest to California. Strangely, though, the battalion's story has not been told from the perspective of the profession of arms. Since it did not engage in battle, military historians have paid little attention to it.Military aspects of the battalion overlooked. The military aspects of this unique battalion usually been ignored. The most common portrayal of the unit has been to treat it as a group of pioneers, rather than soldiers--emigrants who followed a unique path during the Mormon hegira to the Great Basin.A unique military unit. This volunteer unit of five companies was unique in many ways beyond its pioneer experience. Led by regular officers, including Philip St. George Cooke, it served as part of General Stephen W. Kearny's Army of the West, invading and occupying what would become New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Formed in July 1846 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the battalion marched to California, where it was discharged from federal service in July 1847, after exactly one year's service. In the process, it did not experience combat, but made one of the most incredible and challenging marches in American military history. The great march across the Southwest. The story of that grueling march across wide prairies, mountains, and deserts is central to the battalion's story. It symbolizes the very essence of the Mormon drama as a frontier epic, and proves more than anything else the men's loyalty, stamina, and sacrifice. In telling that tale, the author also illuminates the battalion's place in the U.S.-Mexican War, as most accounts of its history have ignored its role in the greater campaign.First-hand accounts bring detail and immediacy to the story. More than eighty diaries, journals, memoirs, and typed manuscript copies prepared by battalion members were accessed by the author in the preparation of this work. The journal of Dr. Sanderson: Dr. George B. Sanderson was known in Mormon legend as "Dr. Death," and was feared and loathed by many in the battalion. In the spring of 2003, the Mormon Battalion legacy was greatly enhanced by the discovery of his journal, while serving as a volunteer assistant surgeon assigned to the battalion. This journal, extensively quoted in the book, provides a window to the soul of one of the two most hated characters of the battalion. It joins the other great accounts of Daniel Tyler, Levi Hancock, Henry Standage, William Coray, and others.Maps and illustrations enhance the work. The two appendixes included contain the Army Pay Scale, 1846, and the Mormon Battalion Command and Staff. A thorough bibliography and index complete the book, and add to its value. The book includes a chronology, historical introduction, footnotes, two appendixes, bibliography and index. With thirteen illustrations and three maps.

The story of the British Army's Household Division from 1969 to 2023. It is the biography of a family of three generations of soldiers who have served Crown and Country during a period of significant social and geostrategic change. The Guards established an ascendancy in the Peninsular War and at the Battle of Waterloo, and in the words of the military historian, Allan Mallinson, 'They have never truly faltered since.' They have done so by changing when change was needed. Her Majesty's Household Division is a national institution, admired by the public through its mastery of ceremonial and the magnificent hour that is Trooping the Colour. It is respected throughout the army for its fighting ability. Unlike many other parts of the army, the Household Division has escaped cuts and its value to the army and to the nation remains undiminished. This is not a traditional regimental history. It is the story of a family of seven regiments (The Life Guards, Blues and Royals, Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards) which symbolise the Union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.Published with the full support of the Major General Commanding The Household Division and its Trustees, it relates the story of the Guards from the start of the Troubles in Northern Ireland through the Falklands War, Gulf War 1 and 2 and, most poignantly, Afghanistan all told with full access to regimental diaries, archives, and personal stories of those who were there.

A fascinating history of Bill Stirling and 2SAS - pioneering founders of modern special forces. Draws on recently declassified files and interviews with veterans.David Stirling is the name synonymous with the wartime SAS, but the real brains behind the operation was in fact Bill Stirling, David's eldest brother. Now for the first time the truth - and the triumph - of 2SAS is revealed.Having originally joined the SOE in March 1940, Bill Stirling sailed for Cairo in 1941 and there had the idea for a small special forces unit to be led by his mercurial brother. David allowed 1SAS to drift under his leadership but after his capture 2SAS reverted to parachuting behind enemy lines to attack lines of communication and gather intelligence. But Bill could rub up against authority, which led to his dismissal as CO of 2SAS shortly before D-Day. However, he had laid the foundations for 2SAS to thrive in the final year of the war. This fully illustrated history details how 2SAS fought with ingenuity and aggression, from Italy and then into France before heading through Holland into Germany. 2SAS was capable of attacking by parachute, jeep or landing craft establishing a template for future special forces' operations. Their feats have been overshadowed by the many books that have focused on David and 1SAS. 2SAS corrects this oversight, revealing that the real innovator was Bill Stirling - the true pioneer of Who Dares Wins.

This book examines military families' well-being and health outcomes by providing a critical theoretical perspective on their position and the risks and challenges affecting them. Authors explore the tension between demands made by two greedy institutions¿the military and the family¿and how the well-being of families is negotiated between the two. Uniquely, the book employs an integrative approach to observing and analyzing military-specific risk and protective factors for health outcomes of military families on various social-ecological levels, including relationship satisfaction and dissatisfaction, intimate partnership violence, parent-child relationships, child well-being, psychoactive substance abuse, depression, and PTSD. Throughout the chapters, the authors analyze research findings that reveal new health outcomes and present an empirically-tested model of military-specific risk and protective factors.

Urho Kekkonen nimitti Keinosen komentajaksi monen kokeneemman kenraalin ohitse, eivätkä ristiriidat Keinosen ympärillä lieventyneet ajan kuluessa. Vaikka uusi komentaja teki puolustusvoimissa uudistuksia, joita Kekkonen oli halunnut, henkilöstön luottamus komentajaan alkoi rakoilla pahasti. Ristiriitojen ja epäsuosion seurauksena Keinonen pyysi eroa tehtävistään vuonna 1969.Muistelmateos kaikkien aikojen kiehtovimmasta puolustusvoimien komentajasta perustuu kirjailija Pentti Airion väitöskirjaan.Pentti Airio on eläkkeelle jäänyt prikaatikenraali, joka on kirjoittanut useita sota-aiheisia tietokirjoja. Airio on koulutukseltaan sotatieteiden tohtori.
