Orlando's historic districts are separate throughout the city, yet its landmarks and its memories unite them. Images of Orlando from 1875 to 2022 paint a picture of a landscape dotted with cattle and orange trees exploding into a bustling city. While some authors claim that Orlando's history is lost, these images show how the city's Historic Preservation Board has safeguarded many cultural and architectural treasures.

  • - Racism and Jim Crow Segregated Public School Libraries
    af Wayne A Wiegand
    382,95 - 1.191,95 kr.

Librarians around the country are currently on a battleground, defending their right to purchase and circulate books dealing with issues of race and systemic racism. Despite this work, the library community has often overlooked--even ignored--its own history of white supremacy and deliberate inaction on the part of white librarians and library leadership. Author Wayne A. Wiegand takes a crucial step to amend this historical record. In Silence or Indifference: Racism and Jim Crow Segregated Public School Libraries analyzes and critiques the world of professional librarianship between 1954 and 1974. Wiegand begins by identifying racism in the practice and customs of public school libraries in the years leading up to the Brown v. Board of Education decision. This culture permeated the next two decades, as subsequent Supreme Court decisions led to feeble and mostly unsuccessful attempts to integrate Jim Crow public schools and their libraries. During this same period, the profession was honing its national image as a defender of intellectual freedom, a proponent of the freedom to read, and an opponent of censorship. Still, the community did not take any unified action to support Brown or to visibly oppose racial segregation. As Black school librarians and their Black patrons suffered through the humiliations and hostility of the Jim Crow educational establishment, the American library community remained largely ambivalent and silent. The book brings to light a distressing history that continues to impact the library community, its students, and its patrons. Currently available school library literature skews the historical perspective that informs the present. In Silence or Indifference is the first attempt to establish historical accountability for the systemic racism contemporary school librarianship inherited in the twenty-first century.

    af Daniel J Gelo
    421,95 kr.

Ferdinand Lindheimer was already renowned as the father of Texas botany when, in late 1852, he became the founding editor of the Neu-Braunfelser Zeitung, a German-language weekly newspaper for the German settler community on the Central Texas frontier. His first year of publication was a pivotal time for the settlers and the American Indians whose territories they occupied. Based on an analysis of the paper's first year--and drawing on methods from documentary and narrative history, ethnohistory, and literary analysis--Daniel J. Gelo and Christopher J. Wickham deliver a new chronicle of the frontier in 1853. Lindheimer reports in detail on the area's Indian peoples. Some Lipan Apaches are killed when the army does not learn of their peaceful intentions; restitution is made at Fredericksburg. The Penateka band of Comanches honors the peace agreement they signed with the Germans six years earlier, but their days in the region are numbered.

  • af Tom Montalbano
    202,95 kr.

Woodbury, Long Island, NY is about to have its day in the sun! After quietly residing in the shadow of its sister hamlet, Syosset, for a hundred years or more, this still-charming unincorporated village, located roughly thirty-five miles east of Manhattan, gets to shine on its own in this brand-new illustrated history by Tom Montalbano, author of three books on "that other hamlet."An Early History of Woodbury uses newly discovered documents, historical newspapers, family histories, diaries, and first-hand recollections to uncover fascinating details of the community's past, from its settlement in the 1600's to its transformation into a booming residential suburb in the 1950's and beyond. This fun, illustrated chronicle traces Woodbury's beginnings as Native American land, its stifling years under British occupation during the American Revolution, its centuries-long tradition of slave ownership, and its awkward flirtation with the Ku Klux Klan in the early 20th Century. It also recalls poet Walt Whitman's disastrous 1840 stint as Woodbury's schoolmaster, William K. Vanderbilt's staging of the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race on Woodbury Road and Jericho Turnpike, and the parade of world-renowned socialites who converted Woodbury's spacious farms into extravagant summer retreats during the Gold Coast Era. The author, a lifelong Syosset native who has spent the past thirty years researching local history, finally delves into the deep files of Woodbury historical information he has compiled over the decades to present this labor-of-love volume to all who enjoy local history, timeworn photos, and plain old nostalgia. Mostly, An Early History of Woodbury is aimed at demonstrating, once and for all, that Woodbury is much more than just a footnote in the history of Syosset.

From a fur-trapping fort to a thriving metropolitan community, change has always been a part of Ogden's history. Settled in 1850 by Mormon pioneers, Ogden was forever transformed by the arrival of the transcontinental railroad in 1869. As horse-drawn carriages gave way to motor cars, a busy downtown district grew up around Ogden's Union Station and notorious Twenty-fifth Street. Landmark businesses, such as J.G. Read & Brothers Company and the Broom Hotel, became a part of the city's unique identity. Also unique to the city were its celebrations and special events, like parades, musicals, and sporting competitions. While change has always come to Ogden, the memories remain.

Fort Laramie was one of the most important frontier outposts of the American West. Founded as the trading post Fort William in 1834, the fort became a U.S. military post in 1849. Beginning in 1841, emigrants stopped at Fort Laramie while traveling the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails. Fort Laramie served as a gathering place for thousands of Native Americans and hosted the 1851 and 1868 treaty councils. When the treaties failed, the post became the staging area for campaigns that eventually led to the tribes's confinement on reservations. Fort Laramie was abandoned by the military in 1890; the buildings were auctioned and served private interests during the homestead period from 1890 to 1937. Fort Laramie was acquired by the state of Wyoming in 1937, and the fort became a unit of the National Park System in 1938. Fort Laramie National Historic Site is open daily except New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. The restoration of many structures to their historical appearance provides visitors with a glimpse of the past.

  • - Political Change in the Electorate
    af Mark Owens
    358,95 - 439,95 kr.

Texas is a solid red state. Or trending purple. Or soon to be blue. One thing is certain: as Texas looms ever larger in national politics, the makeup of its electorate increasingly matters. At a critical moment, as migration, immigration, and a maturing populace alter the state's political landscape, this book presents a deeply researched, data-rich look at who Texas voters are, what they want, and what it might mean for the future of the Republican and Democratic parties, the state, and the nation. Battle for the Heart of Texas goes beyond the pronouncements of leaders and pundits to reveal voters' nuanced opinions--about the 2020 Democratic primary candidates, state and national Republicans' responses to the Covid-19 pandemic, and issues such as immigration and gun policy. Working with an unprecedented cache of polling figures and qualitative data from surveys and focus groups--the product of a cooperative effort between the Dallas Morning News and The University of Texas at Tyler--Mark Owens, Kenneth A. Wink, and Kenneth Bryant Jr. provide an in-depth examination of what is reshaping voter preferences across Texas, including the partisan impact of the urbanization and nationalization of state politics. Their analyses pinpoint the influence of race, media exposure, ideological diversity within the parties, and geographic variation across the state, detailing how Texas politics has changed over time. Race may not have typically defined Texas politics, for instance, but the authors find that rhetoric on policies related to race are now shaping the electorate. The diversity in civic engagement among the Latino community also emerges from the data, compounded and complicated by the growth of the Latino population of voting age. The largest red state in the country, with the second-largest population, Texas is crucial to the way we think about political change in America--and this book amply and precisely equips us to understand the bellwether state's changing politics.
