Effective visual communication has become an essential strategy for grassroots political activists, who use images to publicly express resistance and make their claims visible in the struggle for political power. However, this "aesthetics of resistance" is also employed by political and economic elites for their own purposes, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish from the "aesthetics of rule." Through illuminating case studies of street art in Buenos Aires, Bogotá, Caracas, and Mexico City, The Aesthetics of Rule and Resistance explores the visual strategies of persuasion and meaning-making employed by both rulers and resisters to foster self-legitimization, identification, and mobilization.

The artist Mau Mau has a body of work which stretches back to the 1990s. His street art has chronicled the evolving nature of UK counter-culture and larger world themes which have impacted it. Talking Out of My Art is a chronological journey through Mau Mau's artwork. It begins with his Devon surfing roots and follows his development as a street artist, honing his skills in London, to exhibiting around the world. His street pieces are always memorable. Part of Mau Mau's enduring popularity is his ability to simplify complex themes with a quick phrase and the use of characters such as his most well-known creation, Mau Fox. Aside from walls, barns, boats and an array of other interesting places to paint, Mau Mau's work has appeared on prints, canvases, magazines, clothing and record covers and in exhibition spaces for over 25 years. This introductory monograph presents the monumental work of Puerto Rican born artist Lee Quiñones and follows his evolution over five decades. When 14-year old Lee embarked on his first spray paint mural in 1974, he carried marker drawings into the New York City subway train yards that served as studies to his 52-ft long rolling murals. Drawings and subway photography illustrate how Lee¿s emergence served as a catalyst for what is now acknowledged as the street art movement. Before Lee, graffiti art was accessed by a small audience of young people who coveted style and scale. Images of Lee¿s trains illustrate how he changed the face of the movement, infusing kinetic elements of futurism in over 120 subway car murals across the transit system. Lee invented the concept of the freestanding urban mural in his iconic 1978 ¿Howard the Duck¿ handball wall. He introduced spray-paint based work internationally when he opened his first formal exhibition in Rome, Italy in 1979, showing canvases created in a make shift Manhattan studio where Jean-Michel Basquiat also made early work, also captured in the book. Images show the social commentary and poetry used in his early expressionistic paintings. He was among the youngest artists to show at Documenta #7 in 1983, at age 22, depicted in portraits of the artist with his work from that era. He influenced peers Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Martin Wong, Jenny Holzer and David Wojnarowicz, who are shown viewing Lee¿s work. Subsequent paintings convey how Lee¿s practice has shaped a generation of contemporary artists. His paintings continue to revolutionize spray paint technique and intermix the tools of graffiti with traditional charcoal, pencil, ink, and printed matter. The imagery captures the mood and urgency of 1980s New York and moves from the streets to the intimacy and maturity of Lee¿s contemporary studio environment.

Graffiti is like art: everyone thinks they know what it is, but things get complicated if you try to give a precise explanation. This book will trace a history of the art of graffiti through the evolution of Tilt's work. Graffiti writing, which is based on drawn and painted letters, is a movement many of today's graffiti artists - Tilt included - claim to be part of when they want to highlight their own singularity and resist the "street-art turn" of the visual artworks currently produced in public space. The artist painted his first tag as "Tilt" in 1990. He knew from then on that graffiti would be a lifelong passion. Graffiti conveys a libertarian, if not anarchistic and invasive, relationship with the city, against architectural and urban authoritarianism, the pervasiveness of advertising, and disfigured blocks. As far as Tilt is concerned, the content does not necessarily have to bear any explicit political message: the gesture itself embodies an activist form of intervention on the territory. From 2016 on, Tilt has been recreating a series of abstractions in his studio.
