Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium
This monograph examines the stability of various coupled systems with local Kelvin-Voigt damping. The development of this area is thoroughly reviewed along with the authors' contributions. New results are featured on the fundamental properties of solutions of linear transmission evolution PDEs involving Kelvin-Voigt damping, with special emphasis on the asymptotic behavior of these solutions. The vibrations of transmission problems are highlighted as well, making this a valuable resource for those studying this active area of research. The book begins with a brief description of the abstract theory of linear evolution equations with a particular focus on semigroup theory. Different types of stability are also introduced along with their connection to resolvent estimates. After this foundation is established, different models are presented for uni-dimensional and multi-dimensional linear transmission evolution partial differential equations with Kelvin-Voigt damping. Stabilization of Kelvin-Voigt Damped Systems will be a useful reference for researchers in mechanics, particularly those interested in the study of control theory of PDEs.
As any human activity needs goals, mathematical research needs problems -David Hilbert Mechanics is the paradise of mathematical sciences -Leonardo da Vinci Mechanics and mathematics have been complementary partners since Newton's time and the history of science shows much evidence of the ben eficial influence of these disciplines on each other.
Includes chapters that showcase the areas of continuum mechanics. This title provides a survey of the theoretical developments in the field of generalized continuum mechanics. It covers topics such as the properties of Cosserat media, micromorphic bodies, micropolar solids and fluids, and gradient theories of elasticity and plasticity.
This multiplicity of vehicles, through their physical impact and their emissions, is responsible for, among other negative results: waste of energy, pollution through emission of harmful compounds, degradation of road surfaces, crowding of roads leading to waste of time and increase of social stress, and decrease in safety and comfort.
Nonsmooth mechanics concerns mechanical situations with possible nondifferentiable relationships, eventually discontinuous, as unilateral contact, dry friction, collisions, plasticity, damage, and phase transition. This book refers to a major domain of mechanics, particularly those initiated by the works of Jean Jacques Moreau.
It is a mathematical treatment of a novel concept in material science that characterizes the properties of dynamic materials-that is, material substances whose properties are variable in space and time.
Examines Markov Decision Processes - also called stochastic dynamic programming - and their applications in the optimal control of discrete event systems, optimal replacement, and optimal allocations in sequential online auctions.
Plasticity and Geotechnics is the first attempt to summarize and present in a single volume the major achievements in the field of plasticity theory for geotechnical materials and its applications to geotechnical analysis and design.
Conceptually speaking, common continuum mechanics in the sense of Newton - which gives rise to the notion of spatial (mechanical) forces - considers the response to variations of spatial placements of "physical particles" with respect to the ambient space. This book covers theoretical and numerical developments in the mechanics of material forces.
This book is based on lecture notes for a graduate course that has been offered at University of Nebraska-Lincoln on and off since 1998. Gao of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University for recommending this book to Kluwer for publication in the series of Advances in Mechanics and Mathematics.
The first of three volumes, this book is a basic introduction to classical mechanics, including fundamental principles, statics, and the geometry of masses, and a thorough discussion of kinematics. Benefits advanced undergraduate and graduate students.
The second of three volumes devoted to Mechanics, this self-contained book states, illustrates and discusses dynamical and advanced classical mechanics problems, including novel concepts not found in standard textbooks and monographs.
This vital mathematical toolkit for solving problems in geophysics and earth sciences is the third in the series and focuses on the long-term behavior of evolution inclusions, based on the theory of extremal solutions to differential-operator problems.
This book introduces the reader the theory of nonlinear inclusions and hemivariational inequalities with emphasis on the study of contact mechanics.
Rooted in classical mechanics, this book explores mechanical and electromagnetic processes occurring in Mechatronics, emphasizing theory, modeling, analysis, and control of gyroscopic devices, including advanced military applications.

This book covers the experimental and theoretical study of convection in non-isothermal ferro-nanofluids (FNFs). Since FNFs are not transparent and magnetic fields are very sensitive to the shape of the boundary between magnetic and nonmagnetic media, special flow visualization techniques based on the use of thermo-sensitive liquid crystal films, infrared cameras, as well as local and integral temperature sensors are discussed in the book. This book considers several major configurations of convective chambers and the applied magnetic field. For each of them, the stability boundaries are determined theoretically and experimentally. The physical types of dominant instabilities and the characteristics of their interactions are subsequently established using linear and weakly non-linear hydrodynamic stability analyses and elements of bifurcation theory. The book also discusses the potential of using magnetically controlled ferro-nanofluids as a heat carrier in situations where heat removal by natural convection is not possible due to the lack of gravity (orbital stations) or extreme confinement (microelectronics). Researchers and practitioners working in the areas of fluid mechanics, hydrodynamic stability, and heat and mass transfer will benefit from this book.
