With the advent of perestroika and glasnost in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and their own dissatisfaction with the socialist economic model, Mongolia has chosen to open its economy to a range of reforms. This work studies the changes which began in 1986 and gained momentum in 1991 to elect a new government. The work reviews Mongolia's economic past and focuses on recent transformations. It includes detailed time series data on economic and social indicators.
Rural poverty constitutes the most important development challenge in many Asian developing economies, but much still remains unclear about the characteristics, causes and possible remedies of rural poverty. This book, an outcome of an Asian Development Bank study on rural poverty, presents a collection of economic essays highlighting the major issues affecting rural poverty. It includes a summary of the papers included in this volume and a short synthesis of in-depth country studies which are to be published in forthcoming separate volumes.
