  • - Social Relations, Psychopathology, and Husserl's Philosophy

    465,95 kr.

Exploring phenomenological philosophy as it relates to psychiatry and the social world, this book establishes a common language between psychiatrists, anti-psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers. Phenomenology and the Social Context of Psychiatry is an inter-disciplinary work by phenomenological philosophers, psychiatrists, and psychologists to discover the essence and foundations of social psychiatry. Using the phenomenology of Husserl as a point of departure, the meanings of empathy, interpersonal understanding, we-intentionality, ethics, citizenship and social inclusion are investigated in relation to psychopathology, nosology, and clinical research. This work, drawing upon the rich classical and contemporary phenomenological tradition, touching on a broad range of thinkers such as Deleuze, Levinas, and R.D. Laing, also explicates how phenomenology is a method capable of capturing the human condition and its intricate relation to the social world and mental illness

  • - Variations on Nietzsche

The rise of populism, cynicism, fanaticism and fundamentalism challenges us to reconsider the problem of ressentiment. Characterized by Nietzsche as the self-poisoning of the will through internalising trauma in the form of a postponed and imaginary revenge, the concept of ressentiment is making a comeback in politicaldiscourse.Unlike resentment, the feeling of injustice, ressentiment is an intrinsically polemical notion. It implies a political drama in which there is no inherent good sense in its application and no universal criterion. Drawing on psychoanalysis, political theory, media theory and philosophy, this book examines a wide variety of ideological contexts, offering an examination of the divergent senses in which the concept of ressentimentis used today.

In the second edition of Being (book I of the Science of Logic) Hegel makes extensive use of the term plastisch. Hegelian critics and commentators from Catherine Malabou to Pierre-Jean Labarriere read his use of this term as a wish to override the Logic''s pure forms and rigid conceptualizations of universality. Other readers of Hegel''s Logic, like Stanley Rosen, warned against this plastic model of ''universal effectuality'' and the scholarly danger of straying away from ''the idea of Hegel''s science of logic.'' Contemporary Hegelian studies have been marked by this double turn to the logical foundation and speculative core of Hegel''s system, that is, to his logic as ''science''. This is the first book to introduce Italian and subaltern interpretations of the Hegelian Wirklichkeit (often translated as actuality), and to examine its implications throughout Hegel''s thought, taking Hegel''s Science of Logic as the basis for his philosophy. The volume''s understanding of effectual reality situates itself in a Machiavellian-Gramscian genealogy of ideas, and with an emphasis on the practical element of Wirklichkeit, beyond plasticity and actuality, it systematically considers the applications of Hegel''s logic to his philosophy of nature and the human world. Analyzing the relation between the Logic and its realizations, this book shows the internal tension that inhabits Hegel''s philosophy at the intersection of logical (conceptual) speculation and concrete (interpretative) analysis.

  • - History, Politics and Dialectics

The concept of resistance has always been central to the reception of Hegel''s philosophy. The prevalent image of Hegel''s system, which continues to influence the scholarship to this day, is that of an absolutist, monist metaphysics which overcomes all resistance, sublating or assimilating all differences into a single organic ''Whole''. For that reason, the reception of Hegel has always been marked by the question of how to resist Hegel: how to think that which remains outside of or other to the totalizing system of dialectics. In recent years the work of scholars such as Catherine Malabou, Slavoj ┼╜i┼╛ek, Rebecca Comay and Frank Ruda has brought considerable nuance to this debate. A new reading of Hegel has emerged which challenges the idea that there is no place for difference, otherness or resistance in Hegel, both by refusing to reduce Hegel''s complex philosophy to a straightforward systematic narrative and by highlighting particular moments within Hegel''s philosophy which seem to counteract the traditional understanding of dialectics. This book brings together established and new voices in this field in order to show that the notion of resistance is central to this revaluation of Hegel.

Spinoza''s political thought has been subject to a significant revival of interest in recent years. As a response to difficult times, students and scholars have returned to this founding figure of modern philosophy as a means to help reinterpret and rethink the political present. Spinoza''s Authority Volume I: Resistance and Power in Ethics makes a significant contribution to this ongoing reception and utilization of Spinoza''s political thought by focusing on his posthumously published Ethics. By taking the concept of authority as an original framework, this books asks: How is authority related to ethics, ontology, and epistemology? What are the social, historical and representational processes that produce authority and resistance? And what are the conditions of effective resistance? Spinoza''s Authority features a roster of internationally established theorists of Spinoza''s work, and covers key elements of Spinoza''s political philosophy, including: questions of authority, the resistance to authority, sovereign power, democratic control, and the role of Spinoza''s "multitudes".

  • - Reading Deleuze and Guattari

    413,95 kr.

This volume presents the concepts of schizoanalysis and ecosophy as Felix Guattari and Gilles Deleuze understood them, in interviews and analyses by their contemporaries and followers. This accessible yet authoritative introduction is written by distinguished specialists, combining testimonies from some of Guattari''s colleagues at the La Borde psychiatric clinic where he practiced, with expository essays on his main ideas, schizoanalysis and ecosophy, as well as his relations with Lacan. The last section of the book deals with the subsequent creative application of those ideas by his philosophical and psychoanalytic followers situated within the contemporary moment. This collection also provides the crucial historical context of France at the time Guattari was developing his concepts, including the role of the Maoists and the significance of the political situation in Algeria.

This collection both reflects and contributes to the recent surge of philosophical interest in The Antichrist and represents a major contribution to Nietzsche studies.Nietzsche regarded The Antichrist, along with Zarathustra, as his most important work. In it he outlined many epoch-defining ideas, including his dawning realisation of the ''death of God'' and the inception of a new, post-moral epoch in Western history. He called the work ''a crisis without equal on earth, the most profound collision of conscience, a decision that was conjured up against everything that had been believed, demanded, hallowed''. One certainly need not share Nietzsche''s estimation of his achievement in The Antichrist to conclude that there is something significant going on in this work. Indeed, even if Nietzsche overestimated its transformative power, it would be valuable nonetheless to have a clearer sense of why he thought so highly of this particular book, which is something of an outlier in his oeuvre. Until now, there has been no book that attempts to account with philosophical precision for the multiple themes addressed in this difficult and complex work.
