Karla doesn’t have a dad. She was made with the help of a donor’s gift, her mother has explained. Karla doesn’t quite understand what a donor is, but he must be a very nice man, as he helped both Mum and Karla come together. And so that Granddad and Granny and Karla could have each other. But the donor can’t help Karla get a father. It doesn’t matter right now either, because Karla is busy playing with all her friends. Where is Karla's Dad? is the first book in the series about Karla and Mum. The book targets children aged 2-5 years.
How do you make a child when the mother hasn’t found a father? Even though Karla is only 4 years old, she knows this very well. Karla was born with the help of a sperm donor. Her mum has explained how the sperm and Mum’s egg turned into a itzy bity baby. Karla also pretty much knows what a sperm donor is, but she doesn’t know much about what it is like to have a father. When Karla plays with her dolls, she plays family with a mother and children. In the nursery, the same play is called ‘playing house’ with a family with a father, mother and children. That is a fun game too, but Karla never wants to be the father–she wants to be the baby or the mother. Karla Plays House is a children's book about the new types of families, which have come about with the help of a sperm donor. And it is about growing up in a family without a father. The book can be read as a sequel to Where is Karla's Dad? The book targets children aged 3-6 years.
Karla Wants a Dad is about Karla, who is 6 years old and attending kindergarten and living with her mum. Karla doesn’t have a dad, because her mum had her with help from a sperm donor. Karla knows a lot about how her mum managed to have her, without having a husband. But Karla doesn’t know much about what it's like to have a real dad.One day she sees a dad carrying his sleeping daughter in his arms. That looks lovely! And Karla begins to wish for a dad. She talks to her mum about her desire, and she begins noticing some things about other children’s families: Families can be very different! Some families have a father but no grandfather. Other families have three children and yet room for one more. And not all families–like Karla’s–have ‘an Anne’.Karla Wants a Dad is the third book in the series about Karla, who was made with the help of a sperm donor. The first time we meet Karla in the book Where is Karla’s Dad?, she goes to the nursery. The second time we meet Karla in Karla Plays House, she is a kindergarten girl.In the third book Karla Wants a Dad, Karla is a big preschooler on her way to becoming ready for school.
