Transylvania (the 'land beyond the forest') is a wild, wooded, intensely romantic region, filled with mountains and gorges, myths and legends, dragons, bears, wolves - and vampires. Bram Stoker called it 'one of the wildest and least-known parts of Europe', a description remaining true today. Comprehensive chapter-per-county coverage caters for the diverse range of interests, from city breaks to rural escapes, skiing to wildlife-watching. One of the most beautiful regions in central Europe and home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Transylvania preserves its cultural and artistic treasures in a landscape bordered on three sides by the Carpathian Mountains, home to Romania's finest skiing and hiking destinations. Hay meadows in the lower Carpathians form a grassland ecosystem of extraordinary natural diversity, offering beautiful displays of wildflowers. The Carpathians are home too to lynx, wild boar and one of Europe's largest populations of brown bear. Other natural phenomena include the Scarisoara ice cave in the Apuseni Mountains and the Sf?nta Ana volcanic crater lake in Harghita.

this new cycling guide to East Anglia offers 21 routes for beginners and 'leisure cyclists', covering Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. Each ride includes comprehensive directions, as well as background features on local history, wildlife and culture. All are linked to OS Explorer maps and relevant National Cycle Network routes (NCN), and include National Grid Reference (NGR) coordinates. In addition, each route has been mapped on route planning and navigation app komoot, where readers can find detailed route insights including an elevation profile and waytype and surface information. Using the komoot app for iOS or Android, readers can also use their smartphones to navigate each route. East Anglia, the snail-like bulge protruding off the back of the United Kingdom's east coast, is a vast flatland of broads, fens and marshes, stretched out under a wide sky. Despite its proximity to London and the Midlands, and its continental ferry links, it is one of the quietest regions in the country. The ancient kingdom of the Angles is also its oldest inhabited region, from Paleolithic times to subsequent Viking and Roman invasions; its wetlands tamed with canals and windmills and built over with hundreds of medieval churches. With its level, traffic-free lanes, and network of dedicated cycle routes, this is also an ideal destination for exploring by bike. Most of the rides are around 30 kilometres long, ideal for a half-day outing. 19 out of the 21 routes are loop circuits, making travel hassle-free, and several are adjacent so can be linked, for more energetic cyclists wanting a longer challenge. Places covered include Sandringham, Wells, Holkham, Norwich, the Norfolk Broads, Bungay, Thetford Forest, Ixworth, Diss, Southwold, Walberswick, Orford, Sutton Hoo, Ely, Newmarket and Graffham Water.

  • af June Nelson
    138,95 kr.

A new updated version of the celebrated 1968 title, Galapagos: Islands of Birds, by the renowned late ornithologist Bryan Nelson, with additional, previously unpublished reminiscences and lively and irreverent memories from his wife June. This timely reissue breathes new life into a classic work of natural history that will appeal to bird-lovers and Galapagos-lovers alike. It is as memorable for its groundbreaking descriptions of Galapagos wildlife as for June's naked appearance in the News of the World accompanied by a quote from the Duke of Edinburgh. In 1964 the late Bryan Nelson, a zoologist, and his wife June spent a year living on two uninhabited, waterless Galapagos islands studying the three species of booby ('we couldn't resist also studying the great frigatebird and waved albatross, too' says June). Bryan's book, Galapagos: Islands of Birds was published in 1968 and, although by necessity a scientific study, his light touch and the extraordinary hardships and delights of living in total isolation with no means of rescue should things go wrong, make it an exceptionally good read. Now, nearly 60 years later, June Nelson has extracted the story of that extraordinary year and complemented it with her own recollections. The couple's research and findings remain relevant and interesting, so plenty of wildlife descriptions are retained, but it is the mischievous mocking birds and friendly sea lions which will captivate the reader as much as the famous blue-footed boobies and waved albatrosses. At the end of their stay on Hood, when their clothes were literally in tatters and they went barefoot, they had news of the imminent visit of The Duke of Edinburgh and the Royal Yacht Britannia. June's description of this visit and their lunch on board with Prince Philip, make a surreal ending to a year of deteriorating food: 'Now our flour had around 50 maggots or beetles per pound... Dried beans would have three or four beetles per bean.. In spaghetti a black shadow meal.

A brand new title, part of Bradt's award-winning series of Slow travel guides to UK regions, offering the most in-depth coverage available to north and mid Devon, arguably the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside in southwest Britain. With area-by-area coverage, from around Clovelly and the Cornish border in the north to mid-Devon's Exe valley and Tarka railway line, it is packed with suggestions for where to go and what to do, including plenty of outdoor activities such as horse-riding, coasteering, walking and cycling. Interesting places to stay and eat are detailed, as are festivals, local customs and traditions, historical aspects, anecdotes, gardens, National Trust properties and where to go star-gazing beneath the region's Dark Skies. North Devon has a unique blend of wild rugged coastline, deep river valleys, heather-covered moorland, family-friendly sandy beaches, great surfing and enchanting villages. While the car-free village of Clovelly provides a glimpse of Devon as it was 100 years ago, north Devon is also one of the country's leading centres for coasteering. Mid Devon is the least touristy part of the southwest - truly Slow Devon. The towns still hold weekly pannier markets and the pubs are full of locals discussing the price of sheep and ruby red cattle. People still walk, ride and cycle as part of their lives and visitors are always struck by the region's diversity: the wonderful views, the range of wildlife and the clarity of the night skies. Join veteran traveller, author and Devon resident Hilary Bradt, and her fellow long-term travellers and Devon residents Gill and Alistair Campbell, to discover in this unique guide exactly what it is that makes this beguiling region so special. From Lundy Island to the haunted village of Lapford, and from the extraordinary Fairground Heritage Centre to the War Horse Museum, Bradt's Slow Mid and North Devon has everything you need for a perfect trip.
