Im Zentrum der Werke Stefan Zweigs und Franz Werfels stehen vielfach jene Katastrophen, die in den Schrecken der beiden Weltkriege kulminierten. Um ihre eigene Zeit zu deuten, richteten die beiden österreichisch-jüdischen Schriftsteller den Blick auf den Propheten Jeremia, der einst den Untergang der Stadt Jerusalem und die Zerstörung des Tempels verkündete. Neben einer historischen Kontextualisierung zeichnet Lukas Pallitsch das Nachleben des Propheten Jeremia in den Dichtungen von Zweig und Werfel nach und verdeutlicht, wie dessen unheimliche und tragische Züge auf verschiedenen Diskursfeldern wirksam werden - in der Poetik der Prophetentexte ebenso wie im Bereich von Zeit, Offenbarung und Buchfassungen. Dabei zeigt sich, dass sowohl Zweig mit seinem Jeremias -Drama als auch Werfel mit seinem Roman Höret die Stimme eine spezifisch jüdisch-biblische Akzentuierung setzen, aus der sich wiederum eine neue Profilierung beider Literaten ergibt: Indem ihre Werke das Gewicht Jahrtausende alter Mahnung heben, gewinnen sie an unheimlicher Aktualität und öffnen den Blick für eine Zukunft in einer bedrängenden Zeit.

In 2016, the Israeli Supreme Court ruled that Max Brod's posthumous papers which included a collection of Kafka's manuscripts be transferred to the National Library of Israel in Jerusalem. If Kafka's writings may be seen to belong to Jewish national culture and if they may be considered part of Israel's heritage, then their analysis within a Jewish framework should be both viable and valuable. This volume is dedicated to the research of Franz Kafka's late narrative "The Burrow" and its autobiographical and theological significance. Research is extended to incorporate many fields of study (architecture, sound studies, philosophy, cultural studies, Jewish studies, literary studies) to illustrate the dynamics at work within the text which reveal the Jewish aspects implicitly thematicized. Examination of the structure created, the nature of sound perceived, the atmosphere experienced and the acts performed by the protagonist serve as the foundation of this analysis and offer new access to Kafka's work by presenting an interpretive, space-semantic approach. "Der Bau" is presented as a life concept given the task of constituting identity, highlighting the critical link between the literary and biographical Kafka and demonstrating the necessity of understanding the author as a Jewish writer to understand his late narrative. For her outstanding research project, Andrea Newsom Ebarb was awarded the "Forschungsförderpreis der Vereinigung der Freunde der Universität Mainz e.V." in 2023.

Elias Canetti hat sich beinahe sein ganzes Leben lang von Namen faszinieren lassen und sich immer wieder von Neuem gefragt: Was ist in einem Namen?"e; Seine Aufzeichnungen dokumentieren die vielfaltigen Antworten auf diese Lebensfrage und belegen eindrucksvoll ihre Verwurzelung im mythischen Denken. Canetti erweist sich als ein reflektierender Mythomane, der vom Wahrheitsgehalt des Namens uberzeugt war. Da er Namen zudem eine hohe poetologische Bedeutung zugemessen hat, versuchte er stets, den passenden Namen fur seine Figuren zu finden. Die vorliegende Studie unternimmt es erstmals, Elias Canettis theoretische und praktische Arbeit am Namen' systematisch und auch uber Gattungsgrenzen hinweg zu untersuchen. Indem sie eine Fulle unbekannter Dokumente einbezieht, macht sie daruber hinaus die groe interpretatorische Relevanz des Zuricher Nachlasses deutlich. Die Werke eines der wichtigsten deutschsprachigen Dichter des 20. Jahrhunderts erscheinen so in ganz neuem Licht.

Der deutsch-jüdische Dichter Ernst Lissauer (1882¿1937) empfand sich zeitlebens ausschließlich als ¿deutsch¿ und wurde dafür von Antisemiten und Zionisten gleichermaßen angegriffen. Die Studie untersucht seine Position zwischen ¿Deutschtum¿ und ¿Judentum¿ sowie Grundtendenzen des Werks. Die Analysen werden ergänzt durch die kommentierte Edition seiner Korrespondenz mit Walter A. Berendsohn aus den Jahren 1935¿1937.

Sammy Gronemann (1875-1952) ist einer der herausragendsten zionistischen Dramatiker der deutschen Sprache. Sein Lebenslauf umfasst die Epoche von der Entstehung der zionistischen Bewegung bis hin zu ihrer Verwirklichung im jüdischen Staat, zu der Gronemann maßgeblich beitrug. Seine vollständigen Dramen ¿ ausschließlich Komödien ¿ reflektieren diese Entwicklung und werden hier erstmals umfassend analysiert.

Primarily, the decisive factor is that from the middle of the 18th century German gradually became the language of choice for Jews, and Jewish authors started writing in German, rather than Yiddish or Hebrew, even when they were articulating Jewish themes. This process is directly connected an historical change in mentality and social factors which led to a gradual opening towards a non-Jewish environment, which in its turn was becoming more open. In the Enlightenment, German society becomes the standard of reference - initially for an intellectual elite. Against this background, the term German-Jewish literature refers to the literary work of Jewish authors writing in German to the extent that explicit or implicit Jewish themes, motifs, modes of thought or models can be identified in them.From the beginning of the 19th century at the latest, however, the image of Jews in the work of non-Jewish writers, determined mainly by anti-Semitism, becomes a factor in German-Jewish literature. There is a tension between Jewish writers' authentic reference to Jewish traditions or existence and the anti-Semitic marking and discrimination against everything Jewish which determines the overall development of the history of German-Jewish literature and culture. This series provides an appropriate forum for research into the whole problematic area.

This essay is offered particularly as a contribution to the relationship between theological and literary writings on the Holocaust. Franz Baermann Steiner's (1909-1952) detailed sociological work- he taught at the Department of Social Anthropology at Oxford and developed a sociology of danger that strongly influenced Mary Douglas, T. W. Adorno, Iris Murdoch, H.G. Adler and Julia Kristeva- contrasts with Canetti's emphasis on shock. Canetti's response to the Holocaust constitutes, in Dominick LaCapra's terms, an 'acting out' of trauma: a comparison between Canetti's Masse und Macht and the anthropological texts he uses brings to the fore his bleak depicton of humanity. By contrast, Steiner- in comparison to Canetti- lays emphasis on 'working through' the Holocaust, that is to say, on overcoming the paralysis of trauma by reflecting critically on values that might transform a damaged society. However, Canetti's depiction of humanity cannot entirely be seen in LaCapra's notion of 'acting out': for through the shock of 'acting out', Canetti nonetheless wants to bring about a 'working through'. Similarly, despite the 'working through' shock and trauma are dramatized in Steiner's poetry and his aphoristic writings. Morever, Canetti thematizes an ethical impact on his readership in his aphorisms. In response to the Holocaust both writers advance a theory of power: what Steiner calls danger, Canetti attacks as death. Steiner's and Canetti's respective responses to the Holocaust consists in a critique of static ways of thought, affirming 'metamorphosis', and deconceptualized understanding of the world which connects linguistic fluidity to the everchanging contextualities of social and embodied life.

Die erste englischsprachige Untersuchung der Prosa von Albert Drach (1902-1995) arbeitet die Originalitat von Drachs Autobiografie im Kontext gegenwartiger Holocaust-Diskurse heraus. Dabei geht es um das Verhaltnis zwischen Drachs komisch-grotesker Sprache und dem melancholischen Darstellungsmodus in der Holocaust-Autobiografie. Drachs Prosa legt die totalitaren Mechanismen seiner Zeit zugleich leidenschaftlich und kritisch blo.

Topics treated include the Herzl myth, Herzl's nationalism and Zionism, his self-understanding and image, his authorship of comedies and philosophical tales, Herzl and Africa, as well as his reception in Israeli and other literature.

This volume is comprised of 14 contributions, which are revised and expanded versions of lectures held at an international conference on Stefan Zweig that took place in Israel in 2004.

The articles in this collection originated from an international symposium at the University of Haifa and centre around a major topic in German, European and American literature, i.e. The broad range of authors (most of them of German-speaking origin) necessarily results in an almost equally broad range of answers to this central question.

Nach dem Zivilisationsbruch des Holocaust erlangte Shakespeares Kaufmann von Venedig rasch wieder seine traditionelle Stellung nah am Zentrum des bundesdeutschen Theatergeschehens. Obwohl - oder gerade weil - das Stück in der Figur des Geldverleihers Shylock problematische Konstruktionen "des Jüdischen" ausstellt, wurde es zum Bezugspunkt und zum Medium schwieriger Auseinandersetzungen mit den Problemen von deutschem Hass und deutscher Schuld.
