This role springs from two key problems that face scientists and public agencies required to set acceptable exposure standards or to determine criteria for the toxicity of therapeutic chemicals: How do you evaluate effects that may show up only as subtle functional disturbances?

With this proceedings of the fourth symposium on complex mixtures, we continue to revise and extend our knowledge of genetic methods for the evaluation of chemical mixtures in the environment.

These proceedings provide a forum for chemical scientists and engineers dedicated to making a cleaner, healthier world for everyone. They cover a wide range of related subjects such as environmental monitoring, wastewater treatment, and sludge management.

Water covers about two-thirds of the surface of earth, but only 0.627 percent of this water is the sweet surface and subsurface water available for the survival of freshwater organisms including man (1,2).

As a consequence of this report, a position as science adviser to the secretary-general of NATO (later changed to Assistant Secretary General for Scientific and Environmental Affairs) and a science committee composed of one highly qualified scientist from each of the member countries of the Alliance was established in 1958.

Therefore it is a little unusual for the department to sponsor a conference which is devoted mostly to methodology. Furthermore, part of every conference is devoted to measurements of pollutants. We gave considerable thought to the contents of the conference which would take advantage of the unique features.

Although at present there is great public concern for what is considered by some as the excessive use of laboratory animals in toxicological testing, it seems clear that the usage of mammalian systems may be deemed necessary.

For at least 40 years there has been a great interest in the problems created by infectious airborne agents and other toxic sub stances transported through the air. As a result, very interest ing methods were developed to measure these airborne agents, espe cially bacteria, and some important methods were refined for their control.

Everyone here is aware of the great amount of publicity being given to some phase of this year's topic of "Polluted Rain", but I wonder how many of the younger generation realize how the entire world got into this kind of predicament.

There are many areas on this world which might lend themselves to agricultural development and which are, at the present, not used for this purpose.
