The present volume of the Gmelin thorium series describes the solid thorium-carbon compounds with the exception of the carbides and coordination compounds of the type 4 ThAn* X B, where B is a neutral ligand.

The present volume describes the general properties of the thorium atom and ions, the thermodynamics of its compounds and solutions, the behavior of solutions and solid com pounds under the influence of its own radiation as well as an external radiation field, and spectroscopic data in great detail.

This third supplement to the formula index covers 95 new volumes of the "Gmelin: Handbook of Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry", published between 1988 and 1992. It contains details of over 65,000 compounds, sorted according to the empirical formula and characterized by a linear structure.

This work contains condensed crystal chemical information about individual structure types as well as an extensive chapter on the crystal chemistry of particular structure families.

Volume 5 describes mononuclear organomolybdenum compounds with isocyanide, 3 4 carbene, carbyne, alkynyl, alkene, alkyne, L, and L ligands with and without additional CO groups. Volume 6 starts the description of mononuclear organomolybdenum compounds with 5 one L Ligand, a Ligand bonded to molybdenum by five carbon atoms.

The volume "Rare Earth Elements" C 11 deals with the compounds and systems of the rare earth elements with boron, Le., borides, borates, and associated alkali double compounds.

This is a critical compilation of crystallographic data prepared by the University of Geneva. It contains over 3200 compounds representative of the structure types found among inorganic compounds. The work aims to clarify and classify data for intermetallic and other inorganic structures.

This volume describes binary nitrogen-hydrogen compounds having two, three or more nitrogen atoms, with the exception of hydrazine. It also describes those compounds composed of nitrogen, hydrogen and noble gases.

The discovery in 1922 of the exceptional effectiveness of tetraethyllead in suppressing knock in the combustion of gasoline in engines and its introduction as a gasoline additive in 1923 stimulated an enormous number of studies on procedures for its synthesis and industrial production, on its behavior and uses, and also on the toxicology of this compound and on its environmental impact resulting from large scale lead distribution. The results of these investigations are collected in more than 3000 papers and patents. The quantity of information on this prominent compound fills the second volume of the series on organo­ lead compounds. Complete literature coverage was strived for but not all of the voluminous patent data have been considered. Certain publications on production of tetraethyllead or on use as a gasoline additive that are not reported in Chemical Abstracts (C.A.) may not have been found; similarly, publications that could not be clearly identified as relevant to the subject might be missing. Publications concerning the fate of inorganic lead compounds that are products of the combustion of leaded gasoline as weil as the vast amount of related papers on analytical and toxicological studies and on health and environmental aspects have been deliberately omitted. The literature is covered through 1988; C.A. has been evaluated through volume 110 of 1989.

The present volume continues the description of the chemical reactions of eiemental tungsten started with "Tungsten" Suppl. Vol. A 7. It covers the reactions with the metallic elements from zinc to actinoids. The treatment includes phase diagrams, bulk reactions, and surface processes which again are of outstanding importance in most systems. The raader is referred to the introductory remarks on pp. X/XI.
