Allar hafa þessar verur lífsanda í brjóstum sér og upplifa heiminn og veröldina á mismunandi hátt. Rósunum þykir allt gott og fagurt, þær gleðjast yfir öllu í umhverfinu og taka ævintýrum lífsins fagnandi. Gráspörvamamma lætur sér aftur á móti fátt um fegurðina finnast, telur hana hjómið eitt og rétt til þess fallin að gogga í hana. Margt átti eftir að koma fyrir á ævi þessara grannfjölskyldna áður en yfir lauk, og örlögin að tvinna saman þræði þeirra á ýmsa og ólíka vegu. Þýðandi er Steingrímur Thorsteinsson. H.C. Andersen (1805-1875) er eitt þekktasta skáld Danmerkur. Eftir hann liggja á fjórða þúsund ævintýra sem þýdd hafa verið á meira en 125 tungumál. „Nágrannafjölskyldurnar" birta fagra náttúrumynd, þar sem hversdagslegir hlutir eins og nágrannaerjur eru færðar yfir í ríki dýra og plantna. Allir ættu að kannast við það úr daglega lífinu að eiga erfitt með að skilja þá sem öðruvísi hugsa. Hér eru það blómin og fuglarnir, sem ekki tala hvers annars mál, en verða þó að finna leið til að búa saman í sátt.
