In natural language processing, a tutorial on ¿Machine Learning Methods in Natural Language Processing¿ was presented by Michael Collins, followed by two invited talks, ¿Learning from Uncertain Datä by Mehryar Mohri and ¿Learning and Parsing Stochastic Uni?cation- Based Grammars¿ by Mark Johnson. In addition to the accepted papers and invited presentations, we solicited short open problems that were reviewed and included in the proceedings. We hope that reviewed open problems might become a new tradition for COLT. Our goal was to select simple signature problems whose solutions are likely to inspire further research. For some of the problems the authors o?ered monetary rewards. Yoav Freund acted as the open problem area chair. The open problems were presented as posters at the conference.

Apart from the program committee, we would also like to thank the other people who have made LPAR 2003 possible: the external reviewers and the local organizers Serikzhan Badaev and Anna Romina. Building on the sequence of agent-related events in Germany in the past, such as VDI 1998 (Chemnitz), VertIS 2001 (Bamberg), and KI 2002 (Aachen), MATES 2003 was exclusively devoted to agents and multiagent systems, and the cro- fertilization between agent theory and application. In addition, it built on the success of the past international workshop on "Agent Technology and Software Engineering (AgeS 2002)", and the international symposium on "Multiagent Systems,LargeComplexSystems,andE-Businesses"(MALCEB2002).MATES 2003 was co-located with the fourth international Net.ObjectDays conference in an exciting event held in Erfurt during September 22-24. The MATES 2003 conference featured a sequence of regular and invited talks of excellence given by leading experts in the ?eld. Among these were two k- notes, an invited talk and 18 paper presentations selected from 49 submissions.
Planning is a crucial skill for any autonomous agent, be it a physically embedded agent, such as a robot, or a purely simulated software agent. For this reason, planning, as a central research area of artificial intelligence from its beginnings, has gained even more attention and importance recently.After giving a general introduction to AI planning, the book describes and carefully evaluates the algorithmic techniques used in fast-forward planning systems (FF), demonstrating their excellent performance in many wellknown benchmark domains. In advance, an original and detailed investigation identifies the main patterns of structure which cause the performance of FF, categorizing planning domains in a taxonomy of different classes with respect to their aptitude for being solved by heuristic approaches, such as FF. As shown, the majority of the planning benchmark domains lie in classes which are easy to solve.

The theory of argumentation is a rich, interdisciplinary area of research lying across philosophy, communication studies, linguistics, and psychology (at least). Its techniques and results have found a wide range of applications in both t- oretical and practical branches of arti?cial intelligence and computer science. Several theories of argumentation with various semantics have been proposed in the literature. Multi-agent systems theory has picked up argument-inspired approaches and speci?cally argumentation-theoretic results from many di?erent areas. The community of researchers in argumentation and multi-agent systems is currently presented with a unique opportunity to integrate the various und- standings of argument into a coherent and core part of the functioning of - tonomouscomputationalsystems.Thebene?tsrangefromextendedsemanticsof arguments construed as relationships between epistemic atoms, through conv- sation protocols for argumentation with serendipitous information exchange, to models of dialectical practical reasoning, both intra- and inter-agent (and a m- ture of the two). In all these cases argumentation is used to structure knowledge representation, reasoning and agent interaction, and o?ers a potential means of better integrating these disparate problems.
