Get ready to rock! And improvise! And learn notes on the G string! G Street Rock, by Katie O'Hara LaBrie, promotes both music literacy and creativity. A four-bar vamp allows students to improvise or perform suggested solos. A Guide to Improvisation" is included on the back of each student part, along with sample solos, and the score includes a lesson plan with sequential steps to teaching improvisation. An optional drumset part adds even more excitement! (2:30)"
This eerie composition employs colors and harmonies rarely found at this level. Based on harmonic illusions where notes seem to drift out of context, Mind Games introduces low-1 fingerings in a pedagogical way, encouraging students to maintain a relaxed wrist. The Cello section is introduced to easy backward extensions, and bass players see some simple 1st finger shifting. Brian Balmages has written an extremely colorful work full of imagery equally suited as a festival piece or lighter work. (2:15)
This arrangement of the traditional Scottish song Gloomy Winter's Noo Awa'" is a perfect change of pace for a winter program. Winter Aire has beautiful melodic lines, which develop slowly and intertwine seamlessly, bringing expressive energy to your ensemble. Violinist and composer Morgan Denney has written highly accessible parts in first position that allow students to work on smooth bow strokes, legato melodic lines, and dotted quarter-eighth note rhythms in E minor. A poignant addition to your winter-themed concert! (3:30)"
Golden Grove is a celebratory and extremely versatile work! The majestic lines sweep throughout the ensemble amidst a backdrop of pulsating rhythms. Perform it with your developing ensemble alone, or add the included, more accessible supplemental parts. Whether students have just learned the first few notes---or even if they only know open strings---there is a part to include them! This is an exciting work by Brian Balmages with many performance applications! (2:20)
