Ten years ago the Sunnner Institute on "Trends in Particle The ory" was held in Bonn. Among other subj ects J. Wess spoke on his work wi th B. ZlDllino on "Fermi - Bose-Supersymmetry". In the meantime this subject has developed into one of the most exciting fields of research and the Bonn Summer Institute (August 20 - August 31 1984) was devoted exclusively to supersymmetry. The main aim of the Summer Institute was to provide a compre hensive introduction for mainly young post-doctoral theoretical physicists to the currently most discussed subjects in supersynnne try and supergravity. The intention was to emphasize the pedagogi cal presentation. The seminars given in addition to the introduc tory lectures treat more specialized subjects and are closer to research reports. Since the topics, ranging fromalgebraic structures to experimental implications do not arrange easily in a one-dimension al array, the lectures are reproduced in alphabetic order of the lec turers. The Summer Institute was made possible by the NATO Advanced Study Programme, additional support was granted by the Bundesmi nisterium für Forschung und Technologie and the Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Forschung of Nordrhein-Westfalen. We gratefully acknowledge their cooperation. It is a pleasure to thank the lecturers and seminar speakers for the effort invested in the presentation of the lectures and in their collaboration in preparing the written notes.

During the past 15 years, quantum field theory and classical statistical mechanics have merged into a single field, and the need for nonperturbative methods for the description of critical phenomena in statistical mechanics as well as for problems in elementary particle physics are generally acknowledged. Such methods formed the central theme of the 1987 Cargese Advanced Study Institut. e on "Nonpert. urbat. ive Quantum Field Theory. " The use of conformal symmet. ry has been of central interest in recent years, and was a main subject at. t. he ASI. Conformal invariant quantum field theory describes statistical mechanical systems exactly at a critical point, and can be analysed to a remarkable ext. ent. by group t. heoretical methods. Very strong results have been obtained for 2-dimensional systems. Conformal field theory is also the basis of string theory, which offers some hope of providing a unified t. heory of all interactions between elementary particles. Accordingly, a number of lectures and seminars were presented on these two topics. After syst. ematic introductory lectures, conformal field theory on Riemann surfaces, orbifolds, sigma models, and application of loop group theory and Grassmannians were discussed, and some ideas on modular geometry were presented. Other lectures combined' traditional techniques of constructive quant. um field theory with new methods such as the use of index-t. heorems and infinite dimensional (Kac Moody) symmetry groups. The problems encountered in a quantum mechanical description of black holes were discussed in detail.

This new wealth of high quality experimental data thus pre sents challenges of interpretation and organization of the data which the new developments in group theory strive to meet. The wealth and quality of this new data makes the nuances and differences implicit in the traditional strong and weak field approach testable.

The importance of gauge theory for elementary particle physics is by now firmly established. Recent experiments have yielded convincing evidence for the existence of intermediate bosons, the carriers of the electroweak gauge force, as well as for the presence of gluons, the carriers of the strong gauge force, in hadronic inter actions.

The 1985 Summer School on Nuclear Dynamics, organized by the Nuclear Physics Division of the Netherlands' Physical Society, was the sixth in a series that started in 1963. This change reflects a shift in focus to nuclear processes at higher energy, or, more generally, to nuclear processes under less traditional circumstances.

The sixth Ettore Majorana International School of Mathematical Physics was held at the Centro della Cultura Scientifica Erice, Sicily, 1-14 July 1985. The present volume collects lecture notes on the ses sion which was devoted to Fundamental Problems of Gauge Field Theory. The School was a NATO Advanced Study Institute sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Public Education, the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research and the Regional Sicilian Government. As a result of the experimental and theoretical developments of the last two decades, gauge field theory, in one form or another, now pro vides the standard language for the description of Nature; QCD and the standard model of the electroweak interactions illustrate this point. It is a basic task of mathematical physics to provide a solid foundation for these developments by putting the theory in a physically transparent and mathematically rigorous form. The lectures and seminars of the school concentrated on the many unsolved problems which arise here, and on the general ideas and methods which have been proposed for their solution. In particular, we mention the use of rigorous renormalization group methods to obtain control over the continuum limit of lattice gauge field theories, the explora tion of the extraordinary enigmatic connections between Kac-Moody Virasoro algebras and string theory, and the systematic use of the theory of local algebras and indefinite metric spaces to classify the charged C* states in gauge field theories.
