In 1982-83, Kathy Royer, along with Howard Zehr and Janet Reedy, interviewed and photographed women whose partners were in prison. Out of this project came several traveling exhibits, a drama, and finally this booklet.The initial interviews, exhibit, and drama were funded by the Indiana Committee for the Humanities and sponsored by the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) U.S. Office of Criminal Justice and the PACT Institute of Justice. In recent years, scholars have explored anew the interface between the early Christian movements and the Roman Empire. Once thought to be quietistic, the early Christian movements turn out to have been critical of the Empire and significantly counterimperial. This collection of essays in honor of Robert Brawley turns the spotlight on Luke-Acts. The soundings taken here disclose deeper anti-imperial rhetoric than previously thought. Faithfulness and the Purpose of Hebrews offers fresh answers to several unresolved questions by employing that branch of social psychology known as social identity theory. Who were the addressees? With the categories of social identity theory, this study argues that the addressees arranged the world into two groups: ""us"" and ""them."" They understood their group, the ""us,"" to be the ""faithful."" They understood ""them"" (a symbolic outgroup of ""all others"") to be the ""unfaithful."" Faithfulness, then, is the primary identity descriptor for the addressees and plays an essential role thoughout the text. How did the addressees understand the faithfulness of Jesus? The author of Hebrews describes the faithfulness of Jesus as ""prototypical."" The faithfulness of all others is described in relation to Jesus'' faith, and together they are integrated into an ongoing narrative of faithfulness. What is the meaning of the promised ""rest""? Utilizing a model of present temporal orientation, the study interprets the dynamic relationship between the ""antecedent"" faithfulness of many witnesses and the ""forthcoming"" promised rest of the addressees. The addressees of Hebrews were encouraged to ""understand their futures by looking to the past.""What is the purpose of the text? Social identity theorists explain that groups with a negative social identity have two broad options: social mobility or social change. The study concludes that the author of Hebrews provides internal constraints that are meant to prevent social mobility. The author utilizes social creativity (an aspect of social change) to provide a positive social identity for the addressees.

In the book of Acts divine involvement is everywhere. From the beginning God is responsible for promised action, including the geographic expansion--"in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (1:7)--referenced in Jesus'' response to the disciples, clearly related to Luke''s purpose in writing the book. Geographic expansion, however, is only the second part of Jesus'' reply. Is it possible that the first half of Jesus'' reply--"It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority"--has even greater bearing on the actions that follow and on Luke''s purpose? Is the Father setting times and seasons related to the kingdom''s establishment? Does this phrase explain the conspicuous divine involvement throughout the plot? In Restoring the Kingdom, Michael Salmeier answers these questions in the affirmative by exploring Luke''s characterization of God in three strands: God as the King who establishes and restores Israel''s king, who establishes his people, and who directs events. This unfolds Luke''s purpose in assuring the reader concerning the events that have taken place, helping to more fully illuminate Luke''s theology concerning God and his kingdom.
