Bei den ,,Amazonien-Tagen" 1989 im Berliner Haus der Kulturen der Welt kam die Idee auf, den Dialog mit den angereisten Vertretern indigener Völker Amazoniens zu institutionalisieren. Die zuvor meist sehr kleinräumig zersplitterten und nicht selten zerstrittenen Vertretungen indiani­ scher Gemeinschaften hatten sich mit ausländischer Unterstützung zu Föderationen und Kon­ föderationen auf nationaler, regionaler und kontinentaler Ebene zusammengefunden und auch gewisse Erfolge bei der Formulierung von Deklarationen und der Verteidigung von Landrechten in verschiedenen Ländern Nord-, Mittel-und Südamerikas erzielt. Der zweite Strang der internationalen Debatten, in welche das "Klimabündnis" sich einbettet, ist das damals mit besonderer Dringlichkeit diskutierte Thema Klima, und damit in unmittelbarer Verbindung, die Gefährdung der tropischen Regenwälder. Das "Waldsterben" in Europa hatte die ökologischen Gefährdungen direkt vor Augen geführt, und - vor dem Fall der Mauer - wa­ ren "Global Change" und drohender Klimawandel auch auf den Gipfelkonferenzen der Gruppe der Sieben (G7) nach und nach immer weiter nach oben gerückt. So kam es auf dem Houston­ Gipfel der G7 von 1990 schließlich zu der Entscheidung, gemeinsam mit der Brasilianischen Regierung ein "Pilotprogramm zur Rettung der tropischen Regenwälder" (PPG7) in diesem Lande durchzufü hren.

As a result of investigations carried out in connection with space research considerable progress has been achieved in the construction of cryogenic machinery and in the heat insulation technique. It is for this reason that now it appears feasable to design deeply cooled cables for the transmission of the large amounts of energy as they will be required in future. Superconducting dc cables seem to be appropriate for the transmission of large energies over long distances, whereas superconducting ac cables will be advantageously applied for the supply of electrical energy into the towns from the existing ac power net work systems. Theoretical and practical investigations in connection with the develop­ ment of superconducting cables, carried out in the Anstalt fur Tieftempera­ turforschung at Graz, are described. According to the FAO's latest estimates, the world food supply can only be guaranteed if the 1982 agricultural production is increased by approx. 50% by the year 2000. ¥3 of this production increase must be achieved on areas already under cultivation. This means that in addition to balanced mineral fertilization the use of pesticides will have to be intensively continued in order to fully exploit the im­ proved yield potential of the cultivated plants achieved by breeding. The primary research objective is therefore to extend our knowledge of the uptake and effects of pesticides in the plant as well as their persistence in agricultural ecosystems in order to be able to apply them both more efficiently and more safely. The Institute of Radioagronomy at the Kernforschungsanlage JUlich GmbH QUlich Nuclear Research Centre) is carrying out practical experiments into these problems using 14C-Iabelled pesticides under field conditions. In this way state­ ments will become possible on the uptake and residue situation in plants, trans­ location and metabolism in the soil, the balance in the year of application as well as on the uptake of untreated cultures in the crop rotation. Parallel to this, uptake after leaf spraying or after seed grain treatment is being studied under standardized conditions, as well as for example the mineralization, sorption and fixation of active substances and metabolites in the soil. Results from the past 12 years are being utilized as a basis for an evaluation of the state of knowledge.

Plasma chemistry is realized as the universality of reactions occurring under plasma conditions. The topic discussed in this paper is confined to the application of plasmas for preparative chemistry purposes. Plasmachemical processes are estimated promising for the synthesis of endothermic, at room temperature metastable compounds, for the generation of new species by recombination of highly excited intermediates, or for enhancement of the efficiency of "normal" reactions by temperature increase. A variety of plasmachemical reactions, some of intense technical interest, are quoted, following an arbitrary classification according to the experimen­ tal methods: [1] Are discharges, especially plasma jet chemistry; [2] Glow discharges and silent discharges; [3] High frequency plasmas. Same new plasmachemical syntheses elaborated in the author's group are reported. JCF can be synthesized in good yield and high purity from C2F 3 6 and J 2 as well as other reactants in a glow discharge reaction. Amines are partially converted to nitriles in low pressure plasmas. Favourable conditions for obtaining C F in an induction plasma have been worked out. Interesting 2 4 while not yet profitable are plasmachemical processes producing H 0 from 2 2 H 0 and recovering Cl2 from HCl. 2 Problems concerning the economy of plasmachemical processes are discussed taking the hydrazine synthesis as an example.
