The Pyramid flora (15.8 m. years) is wholly dominated by broadleaved deciduous hardwoods of eastern alliance that indicate ample summer rain. Deciduous hardwoods are largely absent from slightly younger nearby floras (less than 15.8 m. years) that are dominated by mixed conifer and broadleaved evergreen forest species. The change is attributed to reduced summer rain that reflects global climatic change influenced by spreading antarctic ice.

A comprehensive treatment of the taxonomy and geographical distribution of the Euchaetidae, a typically carnivorous marine Calanoid family with a worldwide distribution in the whole depth range. The author redefines the family and its two genera. Species groups recognized in each genus and a total of 75 species found are described in detail and illustrated with figures. Geographical range is determined for most of the species. Keys are presented for identification of the species groups and the species in each group.

This work details more than ten years of study in the Antarctic on the diving biology of Weddell seals, a species capable of diving over 600 meters and for as long as 82 minutes. The authors focus on seasonal diving patterns and geographical differences and discuss how diving patterns are influenced by the physical and ecological environment of the seals.

This work examines the morphological and syntactic dimensions of ergativity (i.e., an intransitive subject is treated in the same manner as a transitive object and differently from the transitive subject) in Coast Tsimshian (Sm'algyax). This language is very highly morphologically ergative and the distribution of ergativity is conditioned by several different factors that are related through their coding of transitivity. Syntactically, the language is not highly ergative, but none of the cross-linguistic definitions of subject can account for the ergativity that does exist.

The deep-sea Isopods, a diverse and ecologically successful group of crustaceans, are the subject of this monograph. The author provides detailed descriptions and geographic distributions for one subfamily (Lipomerinae) in a larger group (Munnopsidae) that have secondarily evolved the ability to swim. Their evolution is illuminated by character studies and numerical phylogenetic analyses. A rationale for grouping the diverse subfamilies of the Munnopsidae into one family (as opposed to three separate families) concludes this work.

This work describes more than 18,000 letters to or about Mark Twain (Samuel L. Clemens) by correspondent name, date of writing, and source (consisting of hundreds of repositories and printed sources). This volume and the previously published Union Catalog of Clemens Letters (1986) provide access to nearly 30,000 documents of Mark Twain correspondence.

This study traces the development of the Noun + Verb compositional pattern, e.g., Latin manutenere, in four western Romance languages, providing listings of medieval and modern examples. The pattern has disappeared from literary French and Spanish, yet continues to show surprising vitality in Catalan, the dialects of Occitan, and even in non-standardized varieties of northern Gallo-Romance.
