Il primo libro in lingua italiana pubblicato su Ferdinando Paer (1771-1839) illustra la vita e l¿arte del massimo esponente dell¿opera italiana in Europa in epoca prerossiniana. A Parigi dal 1807, Paer fu maestro degli spettacoli alla corte di Napoleone e dei Borbone e direttore del Théâtre Italien, divenendo una delle figure artistiche più influenti di quegli anni. Attraverso la sua biografia il libro offre un illuminante spaccato della vita musicale parigina nella prima metà dell¿Ottocento. Le opere analizzate ¿ da Griselda a Leonora, da Sofonisba ad Agnese ¿ suscitano numerose questioni. In quali forme la sinfonia, l¿aria, il duetto, i pezzi d¿assieme e i finali concertati di Paer preparano l¿imminente rinnovamento dell¿opera italiana? E in ambito francese, quali sono le esperienze che portano il maestro parmigiano a comporre un capolavoro dell¿opéra-comique come Le maître de chapelle? Qui n¿a pas, à l¿écoute d¿un organum parisien, établi un rapport avec l¿architecture des cathédrales gothiques, ou rencontré une telle comparaison dans un ouvrage traitant de musique ou d¿histoire de l¿art ? Ces rapports résultent de deux faits : d¿une part, un remarquable parallélisme entre les événements marquants de la polyphonie parisienne et de l¿architecture gothique, et d¿autre part, la propension actuelle à percevoir de façon spontanée cette analogie. Cet ouvrage propose donc un nouvel examen de ce parallélisme historique en tenant compte de la perception actuelle, et en se basant sur les caractères concrets de l¿architecture des cathédrales gothiques, de la polyphonie de Notre-Dame et du contexte culturel et intellectuel de l¿époque. Basées sur la pensée scolastique, les analyses des compositions polyphoniques et des cathédrales gothiques d¿Ile-de-France font ressortir des structures qui expliquent enfin que l¿on perçoive entre ces ¿uvres des liens organiques et esthétiques. Cet ouvrage propose un parcours inédit d¿éléments historiques concrets vers l¿organisation et la perception de créations centrales de l¿art médiéval.

Diese Studie widmet sich der Interaktion von Leben und Werk des Komponisten Arnold Schönberg (1874-1951). Sie orientiert sich dabei an seiner Ehekrise im Jahre 1908, die ihn nachweislich zutiefst betroffen hat, und von der zu erwarten war, dass sie Spuren in seinem Werk hinterlassen hat. Da sie bis über den Tod des Komponisten hinaus verheimlicht wurde und es an explizitem Beweismaterial fehlt, beruft sich die Rekonstruktion der Umstände hauptsächlich auf die Deutung ausgewählter Kompositionen, Dichtungen und Gemälde sowie einiger schriftlicher Dokumente der drei Beteiligten, Arnold und Mathilde Schönberg und Richard Gerstl. Dieser Ansatz macht die interdisziplinäre Studie sowohl zu einem Beitrag zur Schönbergforschung als auch zu einer Exemplifizierung der musikalischen Hermeneutik. Sie bietet ausführliche inhaltsorientierte Analysen dreier Schlüsselwerke aus dem zeitlichen Umfeld der genannten Ehekrise: Arnold Schönbergs Erstes Streichquartett Opus 7 aus den Jahren 1904-1905, sein Zweites Streichquartett Opus 10 von 1907-1908 sowie seine Fünf Orchesterstücke Opus 16 aus dem Jahr 1909.

Tonal consciousness, in the sense of a clear intuition about which note or chord a piece of music will finish on, is as much a part of our everyday experience of music as it is of contemporary music theory. This book asks to what extent such tonal consciousness might have operated in the minds of musicians of the Middle Ages, given the different tone world found in the modes of Gregorian chant, in troubadour and trouvère music, in Minnesang and in the early polyphony based upon chant. The author¿s approach is analytical, focusing on modality and balancing up-to-date concepts and methods of music analysis with those insights into their own compositional needs and processes that the people of the Middle Ages provided themselves through their writings about music. The book examines a range of both music sources and theoretical sources from the ninth to the thirteenth centuries.
