The Korean War was fought between North Korea and South Korea from 1950 to 1953. The warbegan on 25 June 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea following clashes along the borderand rebellions in South Korea.North Korea was supported by China and the Soviet Union while South Korea was supported by theUnited States and allied countries. The fighting ended with an armistice on 27 July 1953.In 1910, ImperialJapan annexed Korea, where it ruled for 35 years until its surrender at the end of World War II on 15August 1945. The United States and the Soviet Union divided Korea along the 38th parallel into twozones of occupation. The Soviets administered the northern zone, and the Americans administeredthe southern zone. In 1948, because of Cold War tensions, the occupation zones became two sovereignstates. A communist state, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, was established in the northunder the totalitarian rule of Kim Il Sung, while a capitalist state, the Republic of Korea, was establishedin the south under the autocratic leadership of Syngman Rhee. Both governments claimed to be thesole legitimate government of all of Korea, and neither accepted the border as permanent. How mid-century television anthologies reflected and shaped US values and identities.
In this illustrated picture book set in 1952, a young Métis girl anticipates the arrival of electricity in her small town.
"The Pig Farmer's Wife" immerses readers into a transformative era, referred to today as the second wave of feminism. Unfathomable as it may sound, it was a mere fifty years ago when women couldn't own a credit card in their own name, take out a bank loan, or manage their own monies without having a male-overseer agree responsibilty for them. The restrictions of that era lay the groundwork for this novel, with many twists and captivating turns turns as the female protagonists shatter the monetary barriers by ingeniously funding their business through unconventional means. As their enterprise flourished, the women not only challenged and revolutionized public perceptions of women-owned businesses, but they also proved their indispensable value to the community. How did these resourceful women navigate their financial obstacles, and what impact did their success have on societal views today?
This book explores the experiences of people affected by the Partition of British India and princely states in 1947 through first-person accounts, memoirs, archival material, literature, and cinema. It focuses on the displacement, violence and trauma of the people affected and interrogates the interrelationships between nationalism, temporality, religion, and citizenship. The authors examine the mass migrations triggered by the 1947 Partition, amidst nationalist posturing, religious violence, and debates on crucial issues of refugee rehabilitation and redistribution of land and resources. It focuses on the drawing of the borders and the ruptures in the socio-cultural bonds within regions and communities brought on by demographic changes, violence, and displacement. The volume reflects on the significant mark left by the event on the socio-political sensibilities of various communities, and the questions of identity and citizenship. It also studies the effects of Partition on the politics of Bangladesh and India's east and northeast states, specifically Bengal, Assam and Tripura.A significant addition to the existing corpus on Partition historiography, this book will be of interest to modern Indian history, partition studies, border studies, sociology, refugee and migration studies, cultural studies, literature, post-colonial studies and South Asian studies, particularly those concerned with Bengal, Northeast India and Bangladesh.

Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio proposes a perception of reality and of what lies beyond it. The rational, the irrational and the transrational are fundamentally linked to this author's writing. His writing is a philosophy of existence, with all its certainties and uncertainties. Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio's writing is marked by reflection and perpetual questioning. One might even say that it is writing at the frontiers of human thought in its relationship to knowledge and truth. The questions that pile up in Leclézio's novels bear witness to a kind of repeated anxiety that runs through the stories and the characters.
An accurate representation of the struggle of Iraqi Jews in the 20th century, Halahmy sheds light on a struggle that is rarely heard, and tells a story that is hugely important.
1953 offers a unique snapshot of life in and around football during Queen Elizabeth II's coronation year. Wembley saw its most exciting FA Cup Final ever, the top flight witnessed its closest-ever finish, the Mighty Magyars thrashed England and players went on strike over the contract system. An extraordinary year in football.
This book aims to analyze the profiles of women built in the poetics of Chico Buarque, confronting myths and legends that projected the image of women over time, contributing to literary studies on the subject. Francisco Buarque de Hollanda, better known as Chico Buarque, is a musician, playwright and writer who became an icon in Brazilian culture, because when we talk about Brazilian popular music (MPB) in the decades of 1960 - 70 it is impossible not to make reference to Chico, due to his great contribution to the cultural scene of the country. Thus, the research aims to understand, through literary analysis, the meanings put in the songs of Chico Buarque, in which he thematizes the female figure, conflicting with the fact that the female is considered a social marginality, in various periods of history.
Beyond Courage recounts several inspiring feats of escape and evasion by downed airmen during the Korean conflict. The airmen endured incredible hardships, first at the hands of their captors, then as they managed, by one means or another, to make their way back to the safety of U.N. lines. As preparation for the book, author Clay Blair researched the military's incident records, then interviewed the survivors themselves to fill in any gaps in the accounts told to Air Force officers shortly after their rescue, and to recapture their personal reactions to their arduous adventures. The stories include members of the U.N. forces in Korea-not solely Americans-but also Turks and Greeks and 'ROK's (Republic of Korea soldiers), and friendly North Korean Christians, who risked their lives to help downed airmen. In addition to enemy soldiers, the terrain and climate posed terrible challenges to men without adequate food, clothing, or shelter. In the story Cold, for example, one can feel the sub-zero temperatures as the escapee struggles to walk for miles with frozen feet (doctors would later be forced to amputate both feet to save the airman's life). Challenges were also psychological, as portrayed in the first story, Robinson Crusoe of MiG Alley. There, a downed airman recounts his shattering loneliness of a month spent on a deserted island-with friendly planes flying over almost daily but ignorant of the plight of the stranded airman below them. Despite the passage of nearly 70 years since the cessation of this 'forgotten war, ' the stories in Beyond Courage remain a testament to the power of human endurance and will in the face of extreme, life-threatening challenges.

Today, technology invades man's life, often to the point of depriving him of happiness, which justifies the need of the 21st century man for a refuge where he can find his lost happiness. Among these writers, Michel Tournier in Vendredi ou les limbes du Pacifique pushes this fugitive man to an island where he not only finds life, but also begins the search for himself. Thus, as the story progresses, the physical journey takes on another form, that of the inner journey. At the same time, Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio treats the same theme in Désert from his own point of view. What attracts attention in these two works is the fact that the journey is first physical, before turning into an inner quest. Indeed, the characters leave their homes and it is through this physical displacement that their communication with the outside world evolves.
IN THE WORLD Some countries in Latin America and Africa, two centuries and fifty years after their independence respectively, have not yet managed to solve economic underdevelopment. This is in spite of the theories, models, economic solutions available or the abundant presence of scholars and experts in the field. Our research has uncovered the main phenomenon that has always prevented and complicated the sustainable resolution of problems in nations, while at the same time transmitting the problems from generation to generation. Our research has just discovered the main phenomenon that prevents even the great scholars and experts from discovering the root causes that produce most of the problem. Now with this discovery, the world will easily solve its public problems. The results of our research provide a new approach to sustainable problem solving. TO THE DRC The results of our research bring the only adequate solution that is missing not only today but since the time of Mobutu to solve durably the socio-political crisis of the DRC.
A writer of passion and death, Duras can also be described as a writer of the intimate. As shown in the stories of the sixties, Moderato Cantabile, Ten and a half hours of the evening in summer, Hiroshima my love and The Ravishment of Lol V. Stein, the silence around which the texts are built, the mystery that surrounds the female characters and their feelings, are the sign of an "intimate" experience kept secret, internalized, never quite expressed. In these works, Duras tirelessly tries to penetrate the intimacy of the heroines by seeking to uncover and understand their experiences, this painful and personal history that remains buried. Duras will thus only write and rewrite the traumatic event lived by her heroines. The lack and the absence, omnipresent motives also associated with the female characters, turn out to echo an impossible mourning. While this process of rewriting is indicative of a quest for a solution, Duras seems far from having resolved the heroines' immemorial past, since absence, love and death are directly or indirectly linked to childhood, to the mother and to the death of the younger brother.
This book follows on from the author's book on the Princess Coronation pacific locomotives from their construction in 1937 to their operation in 1956. It picks up from the story in 1957 with their operation and performance on the 'Caledonian', 'Royal Scot' and 'Midday Scot' accelerated services of the late 1950s, their continuing heavy work as dieselization of the West Coast mainline is implemented and the sudden withdrawal of the remaining examples at the end of the 1964 summer timetable. Included are the author's personal experiences and photographs and the descriptions by three Crewe men who fired these engines on the heavy overnight Crewe - Perth sleeper services in the late 1950s, two of whom, Les Jackson and Bill Andrew, drove 6229 and 6233 in the preservation era. As well as their stories of their experiences in BR days, they describe runs with the preserved locomotives and have included photographs from their personal collections. Crewe Works fitter, Keith Collier includes his experiences of their maintenance and the author in conclusion compares them with the finest steam locomotives of France, Germany and the USA.
A vivid and gripping story of an epic Maine snowstorm that tested the very limits of human endurance. A National Bestseller
