"Operation Enduring Freedom on October 7, 2001 marked the beginning of the so-called "War on Terror" in Afghanistan, which to date has become the longest war fought by the USA and its allies, with thousands of deaths and injuries. For the first time, Emran Feroz describes this 20-year war from an inner Afghan perspective. From speaking to Hamid Karzai and Taliban officials to interviews with affected citizens who suffered the most from this war, this important book gives a true picture from a non-western point of view-one that is rarely heard in mainstream media reporting. It makes one thing more than clear: The US's "Saigon moment" in Kabul in August 2021 was more than foreseeable." --

The first systematic, critical and comparative assessment of new authoritarian practices in the MENA region This collection examines new authoritarian practices that 16 MENA countries have developed in the aftermath of major uprisings across the region. These span new forms of digital surveillance, new protest policing practices, new forms of control over the judiciary, civil society and media, through to new security and communication laws and state of emergencies. The book also emphasises continuities with past authoritarian practices such as intimidation, imprisonment, torture, extrajudicial killing and ill treatment of dissidents, as well as other practices to suppress dissents and control activists, opposition parties, the judiciary and the media. By focusing on micro-practices of repression, New Authoritarian Practices in the Middle East and North Africa balances macro-structural explanations of authoritarian persistence alongside widespread social discontent and opposition. Germany is a central case for research on comparative political economy, which has inspired theorizing on national differences and historical trajectories. This book assesses Germany's political economy after the end of the "social democratic" 20th century to rethink its dominant properties and create new opportunities for using the country as a powerful lens into the evolution of democratic capitalism.Documenting large-scale changes and new tensions in the welfare state, company strategies, interest intermediation, and macroeconomic governance, the volume makes the case for analysing contemporary Germany through the politics of imbalance rather than the long-standing paradigm of institutional stability. This conceptual reorientation around inequalities and disparities provides much-needed traction for clarifying the causal dynamics that govern ongoing processes of institutional recomposition. Delving into the politics of imbalance, the volume explicates the systemic properties of capitalism, multivalent policy feedback, and the organizational foundations of creative adjustment as key vantage points for understanding new forms of distributional conflict within and beyond Germany. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of German Politics.
This book explores the complex interrelationship between fact and fiction in narratives of the twenty-first century.

The current higher education policy and practice landscape is simultane-ously marked by uncertainty and hope, and nowhere are these tensions more present than in discussions and actions around general education. This volume uses an anthropological approach to contemplate ways of re-imagining general education for the 21st century and how faculty, teach-ers, administrators, and others can transform the educational endeavor to be holistic, comprehensive, and aligned with the needs of people and the planet in the decades to come. Included are analyses of general education concepts such as "diversity," case studies of general education and con-necting curricula, opportunities for faculty development, unique general education student populations, assessment strategies, and philosophical/ pedagogical challenges. Contributors make the case that far from receding from a central role in higher education, there is a need to strengthen general education curricula as key to the educational needs of students, for the skills and competencies they require in the workplace and for civic engagement.

Ukraine is a misfit among post-communist states, being neither a respectable, stable democracy nor an autocracy. Nor does it sit well as a patronal political system, like other post-Soviet regimes, since the Euromaidan Revolution. This study examines the presidencies of Petro Poroshenko and Volodymyr Zelenskyy focusing on their common tendency to subordinate the legal system and use it as a political instrument. It finds that this pattern of power struggle concentrated in the president¿s office was, contrary to the theory of patronal politics, more dominant than clientelism. The second theme of this book is each president¿s handling of relations¿largely meaning the war¿with Russia, in the wake of the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and culminating in the invasion of 2022, as the key challenge to the nation¿s survival. One way or another, unable to reform itself or to withstand the Russian assault, post-Euromaidan Ukraine will have come to an end."An important contribution to the literature! There is a lot of interest in Ukraine, and the focus . . . on the past decade or so is so important.¿¿Yasmeen Abu-Laban, Professor of Political Science, University of Alberta

A mere sixty years have passed since this young nation suffered its first successful coup d'état--The assassination of John F. Kennedy. It happened in Dallas on November 22, 1963, and was part of a larger covert, illegal operation known as "The Big Event."In this book about the JFK assassination, the author strategically peels away the created reality, theater, and puppet mastery that was employed by the CIA and the Mafia in the killing of Kennedy, Oswald and Tippit. Step-by-step, you are walked through a journey that exposes the characters involved in the killing of Kennedy as well as their schemes, motives, and strategies. The author also explains six legends that were born on November 22, 1963, and still exist to this day. Three examples of these legends are: 1) six credible witnesses seeing Oswald running to and entering a double-parked Nash Rambler station wagon and fleeing the book depository at 12:40pm CST; 2) initial reports of a Mauser being found on the sixth floor of the book depository; and 3) Dallas Police Department records showing two Oswalds being arrested in the Texas Theater--one in the balcony and one on the first floor. Throughout the book, the author also debunks several lingering conspiracy theories. The final chapter is an almost minute-by-minute timeline of actual events as they occurred on November 22, 1963. It includes at least nine shots that were fired at or upon President Kennedy and the events that led to Officer's Tippit's death and Oswald's arrest.
